Post-presidency election of 2024, president elected Donald Trump claims he will try to eliminate the Department of Education to improve education for all. However, some people are unconvinced that eliminating the department will not work. Doing this would also be complex as it would need several votes and Congress approval. Some people are neutral while some are worried as there is a possibility it can happen. If Trump does successfully eliminate the entire department, then it can undo certain policies, affect education funding, laws and achievements within the Department of Education.
The thoughts and feelings of the people vary on this idea. Some view this as a negative idea. Others are neutral toward it as they claim Trump’s elimination of the Department of Education will not happen. Even though there is a small possibility that the department can be removed, others claim that it is unlikely it will happen as Trump will need many specific supports to do this.
Social studies teacher Samuel Grimes explained that removing the department would be complex, and it would not likely happen. Grimes knows and said that eliminating the department itself will “need many votes in the Congress” for it to work.
“I don’t know too much about the Department of Education, but I know that eliminating it won’t be easy as Trump would need many votes in Congress. So, I don’t think the Department of Education would be removed though I could be wrong,” Grimes added.
Trump nullifying the Department of Education will be difficult. Trump will need several votes within the U.S. Congress to work. Trump will also have to go through court cases and political discussions to make it convincing enough about removing the Department of Education will work. However, millions of people and schools rely on that department program for education funding, policies, balance and assistance. It is still possible that it can be achieved, but it will be very complex for Trump to accomplish it as he has to take several political steps to manage it.
If Trump does succeed, the impacts can be negative, positive or unpredictable. The complete removal of the department will affect several policies and balances of education systems as it can undo those. While removing the department can allow state power to control education and education can still function without it, it may disrupt education data, worsen national education standards, education funding, affect civil rights and many more.
Social studies teacher Gerard Coury explained that if the department does get nullified, then “what is there?” Coury asked that what would happen if Trump did successfully do it. Will there be a substitution or a different program to make up for the disappearance of the U.S. Department of Education? Coury explained that Trump cannot just remove it without a backup plan.
“If you’re talking about getting rid of the department, what is there? If that happens, there has to be a backup plan to substitute it. You cannot just get rid of something without something to back up with. Even if they do remove it, why are they doing it? Do they want to cut spending and be efficient with money? Do they want to change? I guess that there are a lot of unknowns about what it is that Trump’s envisioning,” Coury said.
The exact effects of Trump’s successfully eliminating the department are unknown and unpredictable. While it may undo certain accomplishments within it and affect education support in the short term, the effects in the long term are going to be unknown and unclear.
The Department of Education was established by Congress in 1980, and the department being removed can be detrimental to education support. Even if the department was removed, the federal government and Trump should have a backup plan or substitution after removing the department. The U.S. government will need substitutions to make up for the removal of the education department that millions of schools rely on support to prevent potential outrages if possible.
Trump claims that removing the department will “improve education for all.” While it may not be completely flawed, people can still view it as a contradiction. Trump nullifying an entire department dedicated to education balance and sources is viewed as an unnecessary. The removal of the department will undo specific policies within it, potentially ruining education balances and can ruin some achievements. All of those factors are examples why Trump’s removal of the department is counterintuitive.
Social studies teacher Ryan Miller explained his thoughts on what ways education does not need to be eliminated. Miller said “removing an entire department that millions of people and schools rely on is not necessary to improve education within the U.S.”
“If you look up the fundings of the Department of education, you can see how much money they use to support schools and the people within them. You can see the federal government spending funds to see that how much they support education systems, and Trump eliminating it will likely not eliminate it as millions rely on it,” Miller said.
Trump wants to eliminate the department to grant the U.S. state power more control over education systems. It may provide more education competition and outcome, change student loans, more potential changes within education systems, and many more. However, Trump’s action can be viewed not clear. It can make people question why Trump needs to eliminate an entire department just to make education better for all. It can change school policies, funding, support and many more within education.
Trump’s attempting elimination of the Department of Education is viewed as a positive and negative idea. While it may not happen due to political difficulties, it is still possible it will happen. Trump will need to convince people within to U.S. of how eliminating the department can support his claim. Trump will also need votes and more clear explanations of how the elimination of the department will work. The nullification of the education department may have unpredictable effects as the long-term effects are not known. Despite the benefits of Trump’s attempt, people will most likely view it as a negative because the elimination of the department to improve education is deemed unnecessary to all.
