Students in Carey Nisi’s AP Art class have recently put up a new mural for BLAST week. This new piece of art is in the A wing by the photography room.
Students have been working on this project for “about a week now,” Carey Nisi AP art teacher and visual arts instructor said. They are finishing up their work and pinning it up on Feb. 7.
Students sat at their tables and talked about what they wanted their mural to be about. After brainstorming, they decided to focus on unity.
They worked hard and finished the mural quickly. Nisi said it had a quick turnaround as they completed it in just a week and a half.
“We spent a couple days talking and coming up with ideas to help represent our school as a whole,” AP art student Justin Keeler said.
While working on the mural, students had to create two pieces of art. One was an image that represented the theme of unity, and the other was a set of words that reflected unity. For example, students wrote words like kind, love, and take care of one another to show the importance of supporting each other.
“Everyone made two paintings, one with a word on it or multiple words on it, and one that had an image and my paintings one said development,” Keeler Said.
The students installed their mural during BLAST Week, a week dedicated to identity and celebrating it. They wanted to focus on a theme that would honor something meaningful. The main message they aimed to portray through their artwork was the idea of unity, showing the importance of coming together as a community and celebrating inclusivity, collaboration and sharing who we are.
“They wanted to share the idea of like unity through community, being there to support each other through the good and the different things negative and positive,” Nisi said.
The mural is located in the A wing hallway, right next to the photography room, where it is pinned up in the gallery area for everyone to see. Nisi chose this location because she felt it provided the perfect space to showcase the artwork, making it look featured and easily accessible to all who passed by coming into school through the art doors.
“I wanted it to be in an area that looks featured. it has the light. That’s kind of our little gallery space, and I just thought, we hang our art there and it looks like a little showcase,” Nisi added.
This new mural, symbolizing unity within community, shows off the student’s dedication and creativity. Through their hard work and artistic expression, they have brought this piece to life for BLAST Week, showcasing their passion for collaboration and the spirit of togetherness.
“It was so cool, everybody had ideas and felt comfortable sharing,” Nisi said “it was really fun to give them control of what they were doing, and to watch them work together and have, as always, their very unique solutions to the concept. It was just a lot of fun to be on the sidelines and coaching along.”
