The varsity boys hockey team acquired a new goalie for the 2024-2025 season. Senior Cal Conway transferred from Andover to Stillwater in Nov. 2024. Conway joins his new teammates in hopes of a strong season and a section title.
Conway played varsity hockey for the Andover Huskies for two years before transferring to Stillwater to play with friends. The Andover Huskies completed their 2023-2024 season with 18 wins, nine losses and one tie. Conway played 27 games with a 0.912% save percentage.
“I’ve known him for about a year, we played on a summer league team together. He gives a lot of confidence to guys who kind of struggle with that and he gives good advice in defense because he’s a very good goalie, and if you make a mistake he is always there for you,” junior Cal Grilz said.
Conway’s save percentage in the net is 0.936% this season, tying with junior goalie Gavin Bajda. Conway and Bajda are a strong duo in the net for the team, they provide great defensive plays.
“He has his goals that he wants to accomplish and he is working on them everyday, he is out there early and after practice to be better everyday,” Grilz said. Conway is one of the most hardworking players on the team when it comes to workouts and extra practices.
Although Conway has only been able to play two games due to transferring rules, the team still makes him feel welcomed. He has attended every home and every away game this season.
“We welcomed him to team bonding times and introduced him to people and brought him around the community,” sophomore Grayson Schoenecker said. The team practices every day that they do not have a game. It is a lot of community bonding and getting to know each other.
Conway said senior forward Luke Geisbauer has made him feel most welcomed to the team. Geisbauer is a three year varsity senior. They have bonded very well over the past three months and have developed a strong connection.
Conway has been given a one month suspension on the Stillwater hockey team due to problems in the transferring portal. He states that he has “now decided to join the Juniors hockey league” in hopes to increase his hockey playing time and compete at a high level. As the Stillwater community and hockey team sends him off onto this big adjustment, they wish him the best with his new team.
