Spanish teacher Julie Cashin has been teaching Spanish for the Stillwater Area School District since 1996, making a positive impact on countless students over the years. Known for her high energy and supportive attitude, Cashin has built a reputation as a teacher who brings enthusiasm and warmth into the classroom. Her passion for the Spanish language and culture helps create an environment where learning feels engaging, welcoming and fun for everyone.
Her passion for Spanish grew even stronger when she had the opportunity to travel abroad. At just 19 years old, Cashin lived with a host family in Mexico, an experience that deepened her appreciation for the language and the culture surrounding it.
“My first experience abroad was in 1990, living in Mexico City with a family, learning about the history and culture. I was only 19 years old. Now, I couldn’t believe my parents let me do that, but I’m so glad they did,” Cashin said.
Today, Cashin primarily teaches ninth graders in Spanish II, where her personality and teaching style stand out. According to colleague and friend Tracey Valbuena, Cashin’s humor and resilience make her especially effective in the classroom, “She has thick skin, she’s funny, and she’s super quick-witted.”
Cashin’s interest in teaching started early in her life. Even as a child, she found herself drawn to the idea of helping others learn.
“Since I was a child, I always loved to play teacher with my brothers, and so then I started taking Spanish classes and started traveling, and I was just so excited and passionate about the language,” Cashin said.
Students also appreciate the support and encouragement she provides. Freshman Gabby Hawke, who has Cashin this year, says her teaching style helps students feel confident while learning.
Students describe her as “super supportive and always makes sure that no student is left behind,” Hawke said.
Through her energy, patience and passion for Spanish, Cashin has made a lasting impact on many students throughout her career. Cashin makes Spanish class more than just another subject. Her passion for the language and the places she has traveled make every lesson feel meaningful, and her kindness makes the classroom a place where everyone feels comfortable learning. She has shown many people that language is more than just words, it is a way to connect with the world.
