Students played teachers in basketball game

The student teacher basketball game is something that many people in the building look forward to each year. The basketball game was held on Feb. 23 in the Pony Activities Center main gym. Last year, the teachers fell to the students, but they are ready to challenge the champions this year. The student vs. teacher basketball game is something that is able to bring the community and the school together for a friendly competition.

Junior Joe Fredkove is a member of the Student Council at the school. He is one of the main people who has set up the game this year. Unfortunately, he is not able to play because he is also a part of the boys basketball team, but he is excited to coach and get things ready for the game.

“We had to recruit teachers to play and recruit students to play. We had to get gym time, and make sure everything’s like perfect for the game,” Fredkove explained.

It takes effort to get people to want to play in the game, but Fredkove knows that there are certain things that create a pull factor for the student body. Fredkove explained how “we try to find like their favorite teachers, because if we find their favorite teachers more kids want to play and watch.”

Brady Hannigan is a history, government and anthropology teacher. He is also the head coach of the boys basketball team at the school. He looks forward to this game every year and is ready to get redemption against the students this year. Hannigan enjoys the competition against the students.

My favorite part is to be able to just compete against the kids, hear them talk smack to me, and being able to talk smack back a little bit.”

Although Hannigan enjoys the competition against all of the students, there are a few he definitely would like to go against. He is ready to receive smack talk during the game, specifically from senior Liam Butler.

When asked who Hannigan wanted to see playing he explained, “Liam Butler, because he was talking smack to me already.”

Fredkove is one of the main people who overall decides what teachers will be playing in the game. It is not easy, but there are some teachers that he specifically likes to see playing against the students. Fredkove explained how he wants to see social studies teacher Ryan Miller and english teacher Brandon Maxwell playing in the game because “they are ballers, and I think they will do really well.”

Junior Henry Zollar is also a member of the boys basketball team and will be one of the coaches for the students during the game. He explained that he is excited to be able to have this experience with his peers, and is hoping to beat the teachers again this year.

The student vs teacher basketball game is something that brings everyone together for a fun game. Students are able to watch or play with their friends and classmates against the staff in the building. It is something that not every school holds, so make sure to take advantage of it here.

This year the teachers came out on top, and the students are already excited to get revenge on them next year. The game went into over time and the final score was 62-60, the students lost by only 2.
