Madison Crain is a junior at Stillwater Area High School. Madison is the layout editor for the Pony Express Newspaper. Madison is also involved in Key Club and is a student leader. Madison is a retail associate for Heritage Embroidery. She enjoys spending time with friends and family and shopping.

Girls softball returns hoping to win state

During the game against Cretin- Derham Hall senior second baseman Lauren Greeder got hit by the ball advancing her to first base. “My favorite moment in softball was my freshman year when we had Hannah Heacox as our pitcher, winning the section final game and heading into the state tournament,” says Lauren Greeder.

Before every inning the infield players will huddle up and say motivating things to each other. “Captains, Natalie Ingram and myself we try to keep the girls positive and always have fun,” says senior captain Lauren Greeder.

On Wednesday April 20, Stillwater hosted the softball game against Cretin- Derham Hall, stillwater lost. “Our goal for this year is to make it to the state tournament and how we are going to achieve this is by working hard everyday to get better,” says senior captain Lauren Greeder.

Junior pitcher Emma Murphy practice pitches before she pitches to Cretin- Derham Hall. “Our strengths as a team are we have amazing chemistry with each other we get along, there is no cliques and no bad attitudes, we love to joke around but we always are serious while playing,” says Emma Murphy.

One cool feature of the PEP grant is Stillwater will be getting a climbing wall installed over spring break in the synthetic gym. “The rock will help build strength, power and bring aerobic and anaerobic fitness to higher levels,” junior Kaylie Goltz says.

Stillwater Area High School was awarded the Physical Education Program (PEP) grant by the U.S. Department of Education. “It provides money which the district can use for to fund all kinds of different of enterprises,” says principal Rob Bach.

Part of the PEP grant is to promote healthy lifestyle. Stillwater has already done this by having posters up. “I believe that maybe they will change all foods they have to even healthier and possibly having all grades take a gym class at least one semester per year,” junior Kaylie Goltz explains how she think the school is going to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Other people take their gym and health credits during ninth grade so that they can take classes/ electives that they want to. “I did it [gym] early so that I could have space to take the electives I wanted later on,” sophomore Esther Frantzich explained why she took gym in ninth grade.

With people taking a music and a language their class periods are filled up. Resulting in them taking gym and sometimes health online during the summer of school year. “I did not have any class periods to do gym and health. I did not do it in ninth grade because I did orchestra and Spanish,” junior Rachel Curl says.

During a game of basketball there is two full time outs and three short time outs. “We basically say what we are going to play next and we usually see what is going on, like who is doing it wrong so we try to connect people and then we usually tell them what they are doing so we can try to defend against it,” junior forward Emma Murphy says.

Lauren Greeder commits to UMD for softball

Lauren Greeder has been playing hockey for 13 years. “My favorite hockey memory is my first varsity goal. I was a freshman and was playing on the fourth line so I did not get much playing time. Couch Schied put me into a game in the second period against East Ridge and on my first shift I went down and scored the tying goal making it 1-1. End of the game we won 2-1! It is my favorite memory because I remember the team, coaches and my parents were all so proud of me,” Greeder says.

Team members Linnea Rusted and Danielle Keran put chalk on their hands as they prepare to practice the uneven bars. Chalk helps the gymnasts to grip onto the bars so injuries like slipping do not happen. Chalk also absorbs sweat and it protects the gymnast's hands. ”My favorite skill on the uneven bars is giants. They’re a skill where you basically start in a handstand swing around the bar and finish back in a handstand. You typically do two giants in a routine then let go to dismount. They were pretty scary to learn but once I got the hang of them, they were actually really fun to do,” junior Rustad said.

With trying to parking in the morning and and chaos of trying to get out the parking lot can get a bit crazy. "I would improve getting out because it's crazy. Like another place to exit," said Bennett Hall junior.
