In one cup of an average protein shake, it is possible to fit up to 33 grams of protein.  It’s no wonder people are drinking more and more shakes like these everyday.

More people are drinking protein or nutrition shakes, sometimes before a sport or workout and sometimes after.  Some people are drinking them in place of a whole meal.  Throughout a day, people need around 50 grams of protein, so having a quick, easy to make shake, can help them get there.  Protein is necessary for production, and rebuilding muscles after a workout. They can be used or many different purposes, but people really like drinking them no matter the reason.

There are people who do not want to have a big meal in their stomachs before a big game, or even a work out.  They can get many of the nutrients needed, but in a smaller portion with a nutrition shake.  Shakes are typically around 250 calories, and that includes carbohydrates, proteins, fibers and other nutrients.  Most of it depends on what kind of shake is made, or bought.  There are different flavors like vanilla, chocolate or strawberry, all of which vary slightly on the amount of nutrients if you make them from home.

“I love protein shakes,” junior soccer captain Hannah Beech said. “I don’t like being full of food when I play soccer, and a protein shake is the perfect pre game drink to energize me and fill me up, but not leave me stuffed and feel like I can’t move before a big game.”

Protein shakes are also great for post-game or post-workout recovery.  It is very important to get protein into the body as soon as possible after working out.  It is best within an half an hour after a workout, to get up to 20 grams of protein.  During a workout, when weights are being lifted and muscles are being exercised, muscle fibers will tear and then grow back a little bit bigger and stronger.  If you get protein to the muscles fast, it helps the rebuilding process go smoother, and increases the chances of the muscle coming back stronger.

It helps me physically feel better, I am not as sore the next few days if I down a shake quickly when I’m done.

— Marcus Darby

“I always have some sort of a protein source after a lift,” senior lacrosse captain Marcus Darby said. “Whether I just mix some protein powder and milk, or buy some protein shakes, I always have something.  It helps me physically feel better, I am not as sore the next few days if I down a shake quickly when I’m done.”

A downside to some shakes is the taste.  Some of the store-bought shakes are not the best to have.  They don’t always look the best, and sometimes taste even worse.  The taste and looks will stop some people from drinking store bought shakes.  That’s why there is many recipes online that are easy to make with fruits, yogurt, milk or protein powder.  Although some people will either suck it up, or like the store bought shakes and drink them anyway.

“Some protein shakes, like muscle milk for example, taste horrible and make me feel like I want to throw up,” Beech said, “You have to find the drink that works for you.”

“They are definitely beneficial to me, and I think that’s why others are starting to drink them too.” Darby said. “A friend recommended them to me and made one for me once, and I got hooked.  I’ve shown mine to a lot of friends too.”
