The denim skirt style has come and gone. The design has changed in many different ways. Almost every girl has a button-front denim skirt in their closet by now or plans to buy one.

Denim skirts are super unique and fun to wear. Girls can create so many cute looks by pairing denim skirts with completely anything. It is that vintage vibe that makes them extremely exciting and different. Let’s look back at the evolution of the denim skirt, and the celebrities that wore it from the ’70s to now.

Denim skirts were introduced in the 1970s and they were made by recycling denim jeans. People would cut it up and make it into a skirt. It was very popular. The style of the skirt they would wear was longer than present day skirts girls wear now.

“My mom wore the long denim skirts when she was our age. She showed me pictures one time,” said junior Michelle Strodthoff.

In 1980s, denim miniskirts (that have a pencil skirt silhouette) became a popular teen fashion. They were in darker blues, but the design changed into small stripes that were light blue on darker blue, red on black and acid wash. The trend lasted through the mid-1980s, until the late 1980s when denim skirts with a shorter hem became popular.

“The jean skirts I would wear in high school were not quite as short as the current fashion. They were a pencil style and very comfortable and the faded jean material was popular,” said counselor Mrs. Nelson.

To get this trend to come back, all it took was our favorite fashion favorites wearing it. People like to wear what celebrities wear. It also helps when it looks really good on them.

“I would not wear denim skirts if they were not in style because I feel like it is one of those things you wear because you see other people wearing it. It is cute and all but I would never wear it on my own,” said junior Michelle Strodthoff.

When looking at a denim skirt some people automatically think “that’s so 80s”. When it is styled the right way a denim skirt can look effortlessly cute and put together. Many girls can pull off this cute style.

“Everyone wants to be vintage now and thats the new style,” said senior Chelaina Daniels.

The popularity of denim skirts was going to end in the 1980s until re-emerging in the 1990s. Marnie Bjornson, a well-known figure in the fashion scene, is credited with making the denim skirt more popular in 1996.

“I think this trend will last forever because it was a trend a long time ago and then it came back. I think that will just keep repeating,” said senior Chelaina Daniels.

It was not until the early 2000s, however, that the denim skirt really became popular in mainstream fashion. The start of the trend again started more traditional or denim pencil skirts that celebrities would wear like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kelly Rowland on the red carpet or photo shoots, before the low-rise miniskirts became really popular.

“I love to listen to early 2000s music so I also know the style they would wear. A lot of the celebrities would either wear the pencil denim skirt or the denim miniskirt,” said junior Michelle Strodthoff.

Present day the most popular denim skirt people like to wear is the button front style. This look is simple and comfortable. The skirt is shorter but not as short as the miniskirts.

“The denim skirts I like to wear are the ones that button up all the way and I like to wear it with a plain cute top,” said junior Michelle Strodthoff.
