Defund Planned Parenthood, defund humanity

The battle continues; in the 60’s women fought for the right to have abortions at will and to be provided with good health care, now, decades later the same issue is still at hand.

This battle has lead to the creation of institutions like Planned Parenthood, which helps provide women of all ages with good health care. As of late Planned Parenthood has been getting some bad publicity; a lot of people think these types of institutions are just about abortions. Recently some videos were severely doctored and released; they showed Planned Parenthood presidents discussing the sale of fetal tissue. They are facing accusations that these are true and facing possible defunding. These videos were released by people against the goals of Planned Parenthood, which are to provide health care and help with unplanned pregnancies. Planned Parenthood should continue to be funded so they can provide their much needed services.

Republicans, or Pro-life supporters argue that Planned Parenthood is only abortions and it should be defunded because abortion is murder. However, abortions are only 3% of the services it provides.

Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted, “The attempt by Republicans to cut off support for Planned Parenthood is an attack on women’s health.”

Those who argue that the institution’s sole purpose is abortion are wrong. Planned Parenthood provides 1.1 million pregnancy tests, 500,000 breast exams and 400,000 Pap Smears every year. 37% of these services is contraception. These services are provided to roughly 2.7 million patients, without them unplanned pregnancies would rise 60% according to Guttmacher Institute.

“[Abortions have] nothing to do with providing healthcare to young women who need a breast exam,” Jason Chaffetz House Oversight Chairman told CNN.

Breast exams may not directly relate to abortions, however they are both a part of healthcare. Abortions provide benefits to humanity. They help with unwanted and unsafe pregnancies. Without them the rate of unplanned pregnancies would be higher which would result in more orphans. Along with unwanted pregnancies, some of them are unsafe. There could be complications with the birth, the mother or child. Women should decide what is best for their lives and control their own bodies.

Sanders tweeted, “I #StandWithPP. These attacks come from those who simply don’t believe women have a right to control their own bodies. I disagree. #PinkOut.”

Pro-life supporters argue that abortion and fetal tissue is unlawful, but in fact it is perfectly in rein of the law. Recently released videos implicate that Planned Parenthood presidents are negotiating big money for fetal tissue. The Center for Medical Progress released the videos without consent of the people it illegally filmed. These anti-abortion members have taken new route to intimidate Planned Parenthood.

“Trying to mold an atrocious monstrosity into socially acceptable behaviors is repulsive,” the releasers told The Daily Dot.

The attack was on Planned Parenthood as a whole, by taking out of context the use and talk of fetal tissue. Fetal tissue is used for medical advances, such as developing the polio and rubella vaccines. The fetuses come from elective abortions by willing women. These women already do not want or can not have this child; an abortion is the best route for both of them and the rest of us benefit as well.

Forcing a woman to have a baby she does not want or is unsafe for her to have is what is truly an ‘atrocious monstrosity’. This culture has made progress from the 60’s in many aspects, including women’s healthcare, let us not reverse. The 21st century is not a time to go to backroom chop shops where women who do not want children receive unsafe treatment. Give them access to institutions such as Planned Parenthood to keep humanity safe and on track.
