Walker Art Center produces Rock the Garden line up
April 30, 2015
On June 2o and 21 bands will be taking over the stage at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. 10 bands from Minnesota — punk legends to rock-and-roll history icons — will be performing at this two day music festival.
Rock the Garden is an annual musical festival that was first started by the art center in 1998. By 2008 the festival became quite popular and The Current decided to co-sponsor the event.
“It’s a music festival put on by Walker Art Center and MPR [Minnesota Public Radio]. It brings a diverse range of bands together that are different every year,” said junior Jack Franz.
The music festival has music genres from R&B and indie to rap and pop music.
“I’ve gone for the past few years and I enjoy being able to meet new people and the music that’s both local and national are always really good,” said senior Madison Witzel.
2015 music festival’s line up consist of thestand4rd, Lucius, Courtney Barnett, Conor Oberst, Belle & Sebastian, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, JD McPherson, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Babes in Toyland, and finishes off the weekend with Modest Mouse.
“It was a lot of fun watching all the bands and talking to strangers who share similar interests as me,” said Franz.
Every year this event is filmed, recorded and photographed by 89.3 The Current.
“The only thing I don’t like about Rock the Garden is that it continues through rain and shine. I remember two years ago it was storming through most of the festival and everyone was wet so it wasn’t as enjoyable, but last year it was really nice out and everybody had a bunch of fun,” said Witzel.
The festival always consists of national and international artists along with a few local and debuting artists.
“Last year [my favorite artist] was Jeremy Messersmith because he had a really powerful stage presence,” said Franz.
Some of the most well known artists that performed in past Rock the Garden festivals were Wilco, Sonic Youth, David Byrne, MGMT, De La Soul, My Morning Jacket, Spoon, Bon Iver and Decembrists.

There is a little mistake right in the beginning it says June 2o not 20. Other than that little mistake it was pretty informative with good quotes. It was a nice and easy read!
