NHS prepares to launch spring community events

Alaina Friedrich, Sophia Portelli, and Activities Director Ricky Michael spend time doing volunteer work with other NHS members. NHS works hard doing service projects that benefits the school and the community. “Our biggest projects around the school we do each year are the blood drive (hosted by the Red Cross), the coffee house concerts and the food drives,” said NHS President Sophia Portelli.

NHS is a student leadership organization that plans donation and charity events around the school and the surrounding community. Between all the events they put on over the past few months, NHS has been very busy this fall and winter. The past few weeks they have entered a hiatus and have begun the planning process for all the spring events they will put on.

NHS is largely involved with many of the events around the school (along with student council) but they are mainly involved with charity events and other pro-community events.

“Our biggest projects around the school we do each year are the blood drive (hosted by the Red Cross), the coffee house concerts and the food drives,” said NHS President Sophia Portelli.

The fall was riddled with numerous events including all three of the big events NHS puts on. Now, NHS is currently planning to do all these events again, starting with Feed My Starving Children and a food drive in March.

“Right now is a downtime for us. The fall and winter were really busy with food drive, blood drive and coffee house, so right now we have a break but we have Feed My Starving Children coming up in March and then a little later in March we have the food drive,” said NHS Vice President Abby Lange.

Another important event for NHS is the annual inauguration of new members, which will include many first time members.

“We notify students that they qualify, based on their GPA, to be in NHS. The next thing that happens is we  send out their names to teachers to rate them based on leadership and character. Depending on how those go, then the student will simultaneously fill out there application, and get a letter of recommendation from a non-teacher. After that, a committee of counselors and other teachers is formed and they go through all the applications and decide who gets in,” said Chris Engler, NHS adviser.

Besides the members, junior and senior officers, including the new president are elected the coming weeks after the inauguration, which will bring new leadership to the program.

“It’s not always this way, but usually the junior officers go on to be senior officers in their senior year, so the junior officers this year will probably be in some sort of leadership position next year,” said Portelli.

NHS has been successful in their endeavors over the years and continues to do great charity work with the school and the community. Be on the lookout for upcoming events, such as the blood drive and be sure to participate and support the school and fellow students, as NHS strives to host great events for students and staff alike.
