Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated ‘A Minecraft Movie’ debuted in theaters worldwide on April 4. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Emma Myers, the movie combines the game’s iconic blocky visuals with live-action performances to celebrate the limitless creativity of the Minecraft universe. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is sure to give any movie goer a good laugh.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ follows the journey of a group of misfits from Idaho: Garret “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie and Dawn. Each character brings their own creativity and unique talents. But suddenly, their ordinary lives take a wild turn when they find themselves trapped in a mysterious world known as the Minecraft Overworld. Using their talents and creativity and the help of a new friend named Steve, the misfits must navigate through the unknown world and find their way home.
As a person who has played Minecraft since he was 7, this game has a special place in my heart. It is a game that brings people together and lets players express creativity. The movie captures this in two very different ways. The movie itself portrays the creative side through the main plot. It does an okay job at it by hinting at the theme in the beginning, and at the end, it just outright says it. The togetherness of Minecraft is portrayed very nicely. The movie ads broke the internet by turning ‘A Minecraft Movie’ into one of the most memeable movies of all time, single-handedly spreading it everywhere and hyping it up.
The movie is okay, with ratings saying similar things. It has a 6/10 on IMDb and a 47 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which I would agree with. But the one thing ratings do not capture is the experience of watching ‘A Minecraft Movie’. My friends and I were blasting Minecraft parody music the whole ride to the theater. Once the movie started, the whole theater was laughing and quoting the one-liners by Steve. Especially when Steve said “chicken jockey,” it rivaled the movie theater experience when Captain America caught Thor’s hammer in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Thanks to online memes, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has shifted from being about creative expression to being all about hilarious lines and fans going wild. Though reviews say the movie is bad, people are loving it — with $163 million made on the first weekend alone and an 88% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter (the public review) — showing that people care more about the experience than just the movie itself.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ is hard to recommend to people to watch. The plot is not the best, the movie is cheesy and people are yelling and laughing the whole time — and that is what makes it good. Anyone looking for a good story probably will not find it here. But for those down to have a good time, laugh at all the stupid stuff, and shout the dumb one-liners, it ends up being one of the best experiences possible in a movie theater.
“I think it was the worst thing I ever watched and I would give it a 10 out of 10,” as Senior Calvin Brandt summarized.
