The two-time section champion girls lacrosse team is gearing up for a brand new season. With only three returning seniors, the team looks different—but their goals are the same as years before. With their strong coaching, senior leadership and a talented group of underclassmen, they are setting their sights on another amazing playoff run and a third section title.
After winning back-to-back section titles in 2023 and 2024, this year’s team looks different without their key seniors. With only three returning seniors, leadership responsibilities will go beyond the upperclassmen, making everyone’s role crucial. The team dynamic is shifting, with juniors and sophomores stepping into bigger roles earlier than expected. This change making a team-oriented mindset where effort and leading matter as much as experience.
“A lot of the juniors already are considering how little seniors there are and are ready to step up, the sophomores are also ready to fill into their roles as the season goes on,” junior Marit Wolden said.
With only three returning seniors, the team dynamic has shifted, but the drive to compete at a high level remains strong. Sportsmanship has become part of their most important qualities this season. Players are leaning on each other more, and younger athletes are stepping into leadership roles earlier than expected. The team understands that many people are doubting their ability to repeat the last two years’ success, but they are using that as fuel.
“A lot of people are talking about us saying we’re not good,” Wolden said. “I think we are doing a great job of not letting that get to us.”
With a new team dynamic and fewer upperclassmen, having a strong chemistry is more important than ever. The bond between players has become a key part of their success. While most people think younger players need constant guidance, this team is proving otherwise. Many of the underclassmen have shown up with a strong sense of purpose and dedication. Commitment from incoming players has shown what this team will do.
Senior Rayna Malmberg shared that a lot of the newer teammates act like they want to be there making it easier for her and the captains.
Although the team looks different from past seasons, the talent remains just as strong—if not stronger. This year’s roster includes several college commits: Junior Indi Capelle, junior Marit Wolden, senior Gretchen Wenner, senior Mady Richert and senior Ranya Malberg. Bringing a very strong level of intensity to practices and games. This not only raises the bar for performance but also sets a tone of discipline and determination that helps the entire team forward. These players are used to high-stakes competition and understand what it takes to win.
“Many college commits bring a high level of experience, leadership and competitiveness to the team which will help our overall performance and help us play at a higher level,” senior Gretchen Wenner said.
The team is excited to prove themselves for the new season, and the energy in the team reflects just that. While last year’s senior class left behind very hard shoes to fill, the current roster isn’t looking to the past—instead, they are looking for their future. With a preseason full of captains practices’ the team is already building chemistry and confidence. Players are stepping into new roles and embracing the challenge of keeping the Ponies’ winning tradition alive.
