Rising popstar Chappell Roan released her new pop-country song “The Giver” on March 13. Chappell Roan has made a space in pop culture through her fashion, inspiring personality and her music. Unlike Roan´s high energy hits like “HOT TO GO” and “Red Wine Supernova,” “The Giver” leans into country music blending pop and classic country into one song. Roan´s inspiration for ¨The Giver¨ stems from her midwestern roots.
Roan has created her own space in pop industry by her loud and creativity personality fans fall in love with. But Roan´s upbringing in rural Missouri was not easy. “The Giver” reflects some of her struggles growing up in a small conservative town with little LGBTQ representation.
“I think I have a special relationship to where I’m from because of country music and so to honor that part of myself by making a country song, where it’s like you know what? Yes, I’m gay, and yes, I am ultra-pop, yes, I am a drag queen that can also perform a country song,” Roan explained in an interview for CBS.
Upon its release, “The Giver” made the Billboard’s Hot country songs chart debuting NO.1 this marks Roan´s first NO.1 on the country charts and her third top 10 hit overall. Roan also becomes the third woman to debut her first Hot Country Song at NO.1.
Junior Tommy Rapp explained he loved the country elements and it was a really exciting moment for Chappell’s career to see her make that achievement.
When listening to the giver for the first time it may seem like a traditional country song, but instead of sticking to the typical style of country music she delivers a powerful message about female empowerment and confidence. Many fans were impressed by the way the song incorporates both pop and country into one song.
“I overall liked the song I thought it was a good mix between country and pop I think it’s great that Chappell is making a space in the country music world i think the country music see will improve with new artists making a splash in country music,” Rapp said.
The use of instruments in the song alone keep the listener hooked. The mix of classic country instruments like the banjo and guitar, as well as keyboards and percussion that is traditionally used in pop songs to create a perfect harmony.
“My favorite part of the giver is the instruments and beat of the song. It’s a blend of pop and country that I think works really well together. Other pop-country songs the country gets lost or vice versa, but Chappell is able to keep both alive,” Rapp explained.
“The Giver” is not just a another hit single from Roan with her unique blend of pop and her country roots she is not only redefining what country music can sound like but also who makes it. Roans statement is a reminder to all music fans that music can be enjoyed and made by anyone.
