The Girls of Active Leadership club, commonly known as GOAL, was founded by juniors Rosemary Kubiak and Sophia Metcalf in November 2024. GOAL aims to empower young women in the community by developing leadership skills through works of service and inspirational speakers. The club offers a supportive space for young women, allowing them the opportunity to become leaders within the school community and in their own lives beyond school doors. The club meets weekly on Tuesday before school from 7:05 to 7:35 a.m. Laura Krajewski’s classroom.
The GOAL club inspires its members to get out into their community and make a difference. The club members are encouraged to take up space and use their voices in ways that are not always supported by society for young women. The club creates a safe environment for people who are looking for an opportunity to grow their abilities in public speaking, connection with their community and impacting others in a positive way.
“I felt like at SAHS, we try and find a club or a community for a lot of different groups of students, and I really wanted to create one that I felt I could fit in, and I found a lot of my friends fitting in the same one, and I wanted to create the community that I was looking for,” Kubiak said.
The GOAL club participates in many different activities within the community. Kubiak explained that last month, the club created self-care baskets for domestic abuse victims that they brought to the Dwelling Place, a nonprofit organization that supports women in crisis.
Along with acts of service, the club aids in creating a space for young women to learn how to confidently speak in front of their peers. They educate themselves and others through learning about significant people throughout history, who are making a difference in their communities or the world through public speaking.
“It’s really good for girls to, learn about people that are making a difference, that happen to be women, so they can have, leaders to look up to,” junior GOAL club treasurer Maeve Hermes said.
The club also hosts events such as fundraisers, donating the proceeds to various charities and guest speakers from around the community. On Feb.14, the club plans to host a fundraiser selling raffle tickets to support breast cancer awareness.
“We’re doing a fundraiser where we’re raffling off a speaker, and all the proceeds are going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and that’s going to be matched by a law firm so we can make a bigger impact,” Kubiak explained.
The club has massive plans in the future to continue attending events with guest speakers and having more fundraisers to support women both in their local communities and the broader world. They hope to continue growing, so that young women in the local community might find a place where they can feel empowered and have an opportunity to make a positive impact on others.
