For this upcoming winter competition season, the Chevals have recently welcomed all new coaches on their team and welcomed about 10 new members. Their new coaches Kati Cheney, Heather Perkins and assistant coach Lynsey Davis are all working to prepare the team for a strong season.
Some dancers and captains were asked how they feel about the new members of the team since this is a big change for the Chevals.
“I think it’s been really good for the team. I think everyone really enjoys the new dancers and the new coaches, they all bring kind of a new structure that’s been really helpful,” junior captain Abby Odebrecht said.
It seems as if the new coaches have really helped the dancers by providing feedback and support to the team.
“I’ve heard really good feedback about the new coaches and the new teammates because we are all really conjoined together. Always hanging out and we always do stuff outside of our team practices together,” Mya Cheney, daughter of Kati Cheney said about the new coaches and the new dancers.
The team spends everyday after school from 2:30 p.m to 6:30 p.m. practicing for their winter competitions. This team is spending a lot of time together both in school and out of school, most dancers spoken to claimed that the best part about being a cheval is the relationships that they create with each other and the friends you make from spending so much time with one another.
“I think the community, like the family we have, we have a really tight bond and I really like that,” Odebrecht said.
Senior Ellery Larson has been on the Chevals for about three years has experienced being on the team with the old coaches and is now experiencing being on the team with the new coaches. she was interviewed and asked about her point of view on how the new coaches have been helping the team.
“I really like the new coaches this year because I feel like they’re getting to help us improve our dances and get better scores, ” Larson said.
The Chevals have new coaches for both the winter and fall teams. Their fall team is a performance season where they do not compete, they just perform during halftime at school football games, whereas their winter season is competition season, this is more competitive, the dancers have two dances for the winter performance season and work on them during practices and then compete using these dances at different competitions throughout the year.
Odebrecht speaks about whether she prefers the winter or fall season, “I like them both for different reasons. I think fall is really fun and focuses more on building that community, and winter you get to focus more on improving your dance abilities and seeing other teams dance as well.”
This team overall works together and practices everyday to make their team the best it can be. A lot of hard work goes into these performances and many tight bonds and friendships are created along the way. The Chevals are hopefully looking forward to a great winter season.
