The team is coached by Dave Kahl, who teaches ninth grade science at Stillwater Junior High.  He has been the varsity girls tennis coach since 2006 and also the varsity boys varsity coach since 2008.  The team philosophies emphasize a team concept, positive experience and promoting the game of tennis.  Senior captains Nick Rhemberger, Mitch Johnson, Riley Hollerbach and Daniel Ahrendt are looking to lead the team to a successful season.

Johnson was an all-conference player and Rheinberger received and honorable mention for All-SEC.

After a tough season last year they are looking forward to a fresh start and are ready to prove themselves. Every team experiences ups and downs, and they have learned about the game every step of the way.

“[Last year] It was definitely a building year, and hopefully with more upperclassmen and experience we can hold a better record,” said junior Matthew Treacy.

Every member of the team is hungry for success, and they are ready for a breakout season.

“We plan on getting to the state tournament and improving our game individually, and as a team,” said sophomore Jonathan Luk.

Making a run to state won’t be easy, and the team is already working hard to accomplish their goals.  Commitment is a key to success, and everyone on the team knows it.

“We do conditioning whether that be weights or cardio, and we do drills every day to prepare for matches.  We practice everyday except for Sundays, even in the cold Minnesota weather,” said Luk.

Most of the team can agree that tough opponents are not the only adversity they will face this season.  After last season’s extended winter, all spring athletes are hoping for better weather.

“The most challenging part is definitely dealing with the weather and trying work around rain and snow,” said Treacy.

While the team is looking to win matches, having fun is still the ultimate goal.  While tennis can be played individually, the team still thrives when together.

“I love just being with the boys spending time with them,” said Luk.

“My favorite part is being apart of the team atmosphere and having fun on and off the court,” added Treacy.

A bounce back season is in store for this group of talented individuals.  As they work hard early in the season, look for it to pay off once May rolls around.  With good coaching, commitment, and a positive attitude, this team is set for success.
