From a young age Ylitalo had an interest for science. Ylitalo entered his science project in 9th grade and won the Da Vinci Fest. From there, he expanded and tested more to where his project is now recognized on a national level. In fact, Ylitalos project even has a chance to go to a worldwide contest run by the STS committee.

Max Ylitalos recent science fair project recently won not only the Da Vinci Fest, but also the Science Talent Search. He was one of only four chosen from Minnesota. I designed a new method for producing ethanol from waste paper that is more cost effective than using corn. The project is called Experimental Design Optimization of Surfactant Enhanced Waste Paper Hydrolysis Ylitalo said.
