He wants to photograph seniors and families, but is interested in magazine photography. Nick’s cousin, Megan Ellison says, “In five years, I can see Nick having his own studio and taking professional shots for families, seniors, and events. I can imagine him at the same time having a career at a magazine company! He would be amazing as a fashion photographer.”

Many members of society assume someone is cool for wearing certain brands of clothing or looking a certain way. Many forget that cool should be personality based rather than materialized. Junior Melissa Mcelin says, “People tend to think that all of the mainstream clothing stores like Lululemon, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters and Pacsun are cool. I’m not saying that they aren’t cool, I myself shop at some of them but it’s when people buy things that they think other people will like and they aren’t buying them for themselves.”

Defining a new generation of ‘cool’

Teenagers often base their self-esteem off what celebrities look like, instead of being happy with who they are. Magazines, television shows and the internet show celebrities looking their very best at all times, which makes it very hard to actually become similar to a certain celebrity. Junior Calvin Robinson explains, "If a person that is well-liked and respected does something or wears something different/questionable, it is usually considered cool because that person who did it was cool. While clothing and looks certainly have a place in determining cool, they are second to the person’s personality and how well they treat others. Yet there is another side to it, and that is labeling people as cool because you admire them. While this most often happens with celebrities and we just label them as cool because they’re attractive, it also happens among peer groups.”

Teenagers these days measure someone else’s or their own popularity by how many ‘likes’ they receive on a photo or how many followers they have. Cool is not based off likes online, it’s based on if you are confident and please yourself. Mcelin adds, “My definition of being cool is someone who is comfortable with themselves and is friendly to everyone disregarding their social status.”

‘Cool’ is a word used to describe someone or something, but everyone has a different definition of what is considered 'cool’. Clothing, someone’s personality or interests are some things that people will consider cool. Wearing the perfect outfit will gain attention, making someone at Stillwater cooler than someone wearing non-name brand shoes or clothes. Mcelin explains, “I think it’s cool when people dress a unique way and then don’t conform to any one else’s style of clothing.”

Technology plays a large role in determining what’s cool. Apple products are popular to many members of society and those without one can be frowned upon. Technology has made it easier to see new trends online, as well as see what others are doing. Teenagers can become wrapped up in what their peers are doing rather than sticking to their own trends. Senior Sami Haumersen says, “I’d say cool is the popular belief that is a common like between a group of people.”

She explained, “Hard work is obviously giving it your one hundred percent all the time, not just some of the time. I think always being dedicated and never doubting your ability.”

Konigson commits to play D1 hockey

The Ponies take on Cretin-Derham Hall on Saturday, Nov. 21. Junior defensemen Olivia Konigson saves many goals, despite Stillwater’s loss. Olivia said, “My favorite part is probably being around all the same people that love hockey as much as you. It’s something you can go to at the end of the day and have fun and work hard at.”

Juinor, Olivia Konigson mentions her family and coaches when talking about her inspiration. Olivia said, “My family and coaches. They’ve definitely helped me get to where I am and have inspired me to keep being a better player.”
