Justin Hannasch named among the top in state for journalism

Hannasch has always been interested in sports journalism and this year at The Journalist of the Year (JOY) awards, he attended every sports journalism speaking session.

Journalism can be a challenging subject to succeed in, and according to Senior, Hannasch "dedication is the biggest thing" needed for success.

Hannasch has been interested in writing since junior high. "I had always wanted to be a sports journalist" said Hannasch.

Max Ylitalo's recent science fair project recently won not only the Da Vinci Fest, but also the Science Talent Search. He was one of only four chosen from Minnesota. "I designed a new method for producing ethanol from waste paper that is more cost effective than using corn. The project is called 'Experimental Design Optimization of Surfactant Enhanced Waste Paper Hydrolysis" Ylitalo said.

In order to participate in the program, students are required to stay on campus. This may be nerve-racker for many students, but the MCAD faculty pride themselves on providing a positive environment for all students.

MCAD Art Program welcomes high school students

To allow students to work to their full potential, they will be allowed all day access to a number of professional art studios. With state of the art equipment and a skilled staff students are sure to have everything they need in order to work on their artistic abilities.

By participating in in the summer program students will begin to learn skills needed to work in a more professional artistic setting. The program is much more rigorous than any high school art course.

Students at Oak Park Elementary proudly display their artwork on the wall in the staircase of their school. Most of the art was made by 5th and 6th graders and some pieces may even be entered int he Da Vinci Fest this year. The kids at Oak Park take pride in their work which is an important quality in the worlds of art and science alike.

Da Vinci Fest molds inventive minds

Creativity is key in the Da Vinci Fest. Students are rewarded for original ideas and for thinking out of the box. Contrary to popular belief creativity in science is just as important as in art. The creativity it took a 4th grade student to make this owl is not much different from the creativity used by upperclassmen to come up with dazzling scientific research projects.

Creativity and artistic talent start at an early age. The results may not always be as expected, but its the unconventional way of thinking that paves way for the next generation of artists and scientists alike. No one is born able to create masterpieces by 5th grade its the constant curiosity and will to experiment that sets artists and scientists apart from the rest.

In elementary schools across the country an emphasis on art is being added to the curriculum. The influence art can have on a young child is outstanding. Member of The Partnership Plan, Bev Petrie said that the two best things to have when competing in Da VInci Fest are "curiosity and a good idea."

Artwork from the 4rd graders at Oak Park Elementary School. The minimum age required to compete in Da Vinci Fest is 4th grade, although these students participate in a much less competitive manor it is still a good opportunity to showcase their creativity early on.

Goggles protect skiers' and snowboarders' from frigid air and flying snow and play a crucial role in helping them get downhill safely. "in my opinion goggles are one of the most helpful things to have, makes everything on the hill ten times more visible" said Junior, Gunnar Richars

Gloves and mittens are perhaps one of the most important things to have while skiing or snowboarding. "It can get real cold when you're going fast down a hill, and its no fun to have your day ruined over something as small as not having good enough gloves" claimed Senior, Giorgina Ferrari.

A small selection of different snow boards each unique with a different design. "Having cool artwork on your board is nice, plenty of boarders have complimented my board" said Junior, Gunnar Richars.

Helmets are an optional, but highly recommended. Junior, Gunnar Richars said "Alot of people don't want to wear helmets, because theyre worried about looking cool. I feel its not worth the risk of getting a serious injury and ruining the rest of the winter".

A selection of winter coats at Dick's sporting goods in Woodbury. They carry a large range of jackets in many sizes, and have a very vast price range. Senior, Giorgina Ferrari stated "jackets are the most important article of winter gear. I spent around $300 on my Desente jacket, and it never fails to keep me warm on the slopes".

Over 20 students decided to attend the annual library lock-in at Stillwater area high school. Students pack sleeping bags and spend the night in the media center and do activities with their classmates and friends. Junior, Zach Toohey exclaims "I love getting together with friends to play scrabble in the library! its like one big happy family". students enjoy the lock-in every year and are passionate about maintaining it as a tradition for years to come.

Two hours into the Stillwater poetry fair, English teacher Rachel Steil prepares to deliver her second poem of the night. Poetry night allows students to get together and share poetry (original or not) with their classmates. Steil has hosted the event for 3 years now and claims "each year the attendance doubles in size" the poetry fair proves itself to be a great way to appreciate art and have fun.
