Drawing in 3 dimensions

The world’s first ever 3D printing pen has been brought into our high tech world. This pen, called the 3Doodler, is an invention that can be used very quickly and allows people to draw in the air.

This technology was created by the company that was founded in 2010 called Wobbleworks. The pen is available to pre-order for a total of $99 online and soon will be sold in Brookstone’s retail stores.

It is a hand-held object that uses ABS or PLA plastic that is inserted at the top of the pen and then pushed through the device, slowly heating it. When the plastic is being pushed out of the nozzle, there is a fan above it that cools the plastic while it is emitted out. It  then sets in place, allowing anyone to draw and create any amazing sculpture in mid air.

There are many varieties of colors to be selected for these pieces of plastic that allow for drawing or designing anything you would like. This very advanced product does not require any computers or software with it; it is easy and fast to use, allowing it to be manageable for all ages.

The 3Doodler is made to either freestyle ones own art and style anything one would like or imagine, or it is made to trace things from made templates to create bigger creations.

“I feel like this pen would be very beneficial to artists, because it will give them new creativity and completely change the way art is viewed. It will open up new perspectives on art and it can bring new things to our advancing technology,” said junior Todd Nelson, a current art student.

Even though this new advancement in our technology has been created, it may not be the type of product for everyone. Many people enjoy the idea of creating two-dimensional drawings and love the art and concept of those drawings. With the product being entirely new, it may have issues and problems that need to be fixed and adjusted.

“I would prefer a two-dimensional pen as far as art is concerned. I think the three dimensional pen is an awesome and useful invention, but it also takes away one of my favorite challenges required of drawing. That challenge being making a two-dimensional drawing look three dimensional,” explained junior Sarah Adkins.

The Wobbleworks company is also looking at the future of schools and teachers with the new product and they are in the process of creating partnerships with different educational distributors and schools. With this product it is possible to bring new art classes to schools of 3Doodling and creating three-dimensional objects in the air.

“In one of my clay classes we are working on describing line on a three-dimensional form. It can be hard to understand, but if we were to use line in sculptural form with using the pen then it would make it a lot easier with creating how the objects are supposed to be perceived making it a helpful tool. It sounds like an interesting new product and I would like to see more of it,” added SAHS art teacher Peter Koltun.

This revolutionary, recently created product has been brought into the art world, and has opened new doors to new creations and talents. From children, students, adults or teachers, this product will be useful and fun to any age or person.
