The jean skirt, once popular in the ’80s, has resurfaced as one of this year’s hottest fashion trends. Many people from A-listers to average high school students can often be seen sporting this new trend.

Different features have been added to this returning trend. The skirts differ in length, color and are designed to fit the fashion criteria for 40 years later.  Jean skirts can be spotted all year, which is likely what makes them have the hype they as people realize they can wear this skirt to compliment any outfit during any season.

This trend is mainly worn by younger people in their teens to twenties. Many students wearing the skirt also had a mom who wore the same type of clothing years earlier when they were in high school.

“My mom always says ‘I wore all these trends when I was in my twenties and now you girls are all wearing them,'” junior Maggie Raedeke said.  “My mom always said she used to wear the high waisted Levi ones like the ones I wear,” senior Ava Howard explained.

The jean skirt, however, is not the only vintage trend worn by fashionforward people right now.  There are many other accessories and articles of clothing that fit into the same category as “vintage” along with jean skirts.

“There is a lot of stuff right now that, especially neon stuff that you often see people wearing,” senior Marietta Johns said. “I love scrunchies, they are so comfortable.  And turtle necks, I love turtle necks,” Raedeke said.

Jean skirts can be used to dress up any outfit in any season. As far as what to wear for a top, the possibilities are endless.

“I like to wear a long sleeve crop top with some cute sneakers,” Howard said. “You can wear whatever you want. You can wear a plain shirt, comfortable or anything else,” Johns added.

These skirts have changed a lot to fit the fashion forward trends of 2016.  Some changes are subtle such as the buttons in the front. Some changes however are much more noticeable such as the change in length.

“We’re not wearing jean skirts with shoulder pads and neon colors like in the 80s, I think now is a lot more natural approach to the dressing. We like to be a little more scandalous with tighter tops and a bit more boho than what was popular in the 80s,” Raedeke said. “Today we definitely wear our skirts much shorter,” Johns said.

Jean skirts are not as comfortable as a normal pair of leggings but they make up for it in presentation. Many girls would prefer a skirt somedays to make them feel more put together and able to tackle the day.

“Leggings are the most comfortable, but I wear skirts because I think they are the cutest,” Howard said.  “Leggings are way more comfortable but skirts are way cuter and it’s not that they’re that uncomfortable,” Johns said.

The returning jean skirt provides a new trend that can be enjoyed by all people. This look can  spice up an everyday outfit and give it the flair it needs to be fashion forward. Being acceptable in all seasons make this trend even more popular as people can see the options available for their outfits each morning.
