Coffee shop brews new options
November 3, 2013
The coffee shop is a multipurpose profitable fundraiser that allows for teachers to do more new and exciting activities in the classroom. The main purpose for the coffee shop is to give students the opportunity to get coffee and make it a social event to connect with others. There has been talk about getting a new coffee shop in the upstairs library, but it is still under consideration and evaluation. Although with the new addition of a mocha coffee and treats for sale, the coffee shop hopes to grow from 25 cups a day to 50 plus.
Media specialist, Kristine Vick said, “I think if anything the coffee shop would be a nice addition. It would be a nice place for people to meet their friends and talk and maybe grab a cup of coffee.”
Laurie McKenzie, a special services teacher, is the coordinator of the coffee shop and wants to expand it by adding more products. She has added the mocha coffee, three layered pretzels and three different kinds of Jack Linked beef sticks. The proceeds for the pretzels and beef sticks will go to a newer organization for Stillwater called Skills USA, a national student organization that is supported by 1,200 businesses.
“There is a new drink, mocha coffee. We figured that would be a great seller, as the weather cools off people tend to crave a little bit of chocolate in their drink.” McKenzie said, “We have also temporarily added a couple of food items. We have added pretzel sticks which, the thing about our pretzel sticks that is very appealing, is that they are dipped in chocolate and then rolled in m&ms, cake sprinkles or toffee coverings. It will be a great seller here.”
The coffee shop is meant for interaction, and it already has some regular attendees. A lot of students take advantage of the coffee house and use it as their daily supply of energy for the day ahead of them.
Junior Olivia Alvarado said, “I get coffee from the coffee shop at least 3 times a week. It gives me a boost of energy that I need to keep awake, and I am really excited to try the new mocha coffee.”
The coffee shop gives off a great social and comfortable vibe. With the new products in the shop and the probability of another coffee shop upstairs, there is hope to see a rise of interaction and delight with the students and staff.

This article flows very well and has a nice balance between informative and creative. Readers can easily obtain information and details about the location of the coffee shop and the products provided, while at the same time, learn about the social aspect of the coffee shop. I like how you include the organization that benefits from the cause-Skills USA-and how you pull quotes from legitimate primary sources. Overall very well-written!

The headline of this article is creative. The body of the article is very informative and helpful. The coffee shop seems like a cool place and this article helped me find out the new editions. The choice to interview Vick was a good choice because they seem like a reliable source for accurate information. Overall, you covered the topic very well and it made me very much so informed.

I really liked the cohesiveness of this article. All of your facts and quotes were laid out very nicely and it all flowed together, making it easy and interesting to read. The quotes were also nice because they were reflective of the people actually implementing the coffee shop. As opposed to having a bunch of kids saying, “I love coffee!” you had the people actually involved with the setup quoted which was great! I also thought the title was especially clever.

Well written! The title is very creative. Your quotes are embedded nicely. I thought that adding the detail about donating proceeds to Skills USA made your story all the more compelling. Your angle is clear and effective. I thought that the ‘social aspect’ of the coffee shop was accurate! I am exicted to try the mocha coffee!
