One of the most anticipated and eerie movies of the year is finally out, showing us a blend of chilling and supernatural horror with deeply emotional layers as it delves into the family dynamics. Throughout “The Conjuring: Last Rites”, we get a clear image of how the Warrens’ hunting career is getting close to an end as they face one of the most powerful and wicked demons from their career, the entity that started their journey and may bring it to an end. The film also explores situations like family dynamics under extraordinary pressure.
In the movie, we continue following the Warren’s journey, as they face one of the most dangerous and powerful entities in their career, and learn how this experience leads to the end of their career. In the film we get to see how the Warrens are finally retired after their long journey as their daughter is starting her adult life. We also see their very beginning as hunters, which is introduced at the start of the movie. This is as well the introduction and the first look we get to this entity. The film really gives off a bittersweet emotion and it marks the closing chapter of Ed and Lorraine and the introduction of their new life, which can be seen as a very big turn for them. We also get a glimpse of the familiar atmosphere and dynamics and facing not only individual challenges, but the introduction of new people. Setting a more dramatic and emotional mood and environment that contrasts with the eerie setting and still highlighting that scary feeling.
As a person who is very interested in horror movies, I been really hyped and excited about this last and final artwork and how it will wrap up the whole franchise since its been going for several years, we see how the Warren’s family re-encounters demons and entities from the past while facing new challenges in life like family dynamics in the family those internally conflicts they are facing. There are some new characters like the family that the entity was targeting and that they are aiding. With all of these new characters and figures, we get an emphasis of how family union really affects the way people face situations and how being accompanied by your loved ones surely takes a weight off and balances.
The film’s nostalgic and warmth scenery really sets the mood and mindset of a last journey and challenge, showing unforgettable memories through their years as well as keeping that scary and eerie mood when it comes to the suspenseful parts. Personally, I would say the cast did a great job portraying their characters, especially Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson‘s characters as Ed and Lorraine it really emphasized the relation and chemistry they show as a couple that they’ve had through the franchise. On the other hand, we get the introduction of new actors such as Mia Tomlinson who interpreted Judy Warren as a grown-up. She definitely did a great job setting up the context as showing how mature this character became. In addition to character development, the cinematography significantly shapes the audience’s experience. In the film, we get elaborate camera work, direction, and cinematography, some of the main things that really transmit and set the essence and message of the movie. We also get a soundtrack that helped shape the emotion and the mood of each scene.
I want to mention some qualities of the movie I did not like as much. First of all, I would like to start by pointing out that the directors of the movie modified certain parts of the story in order to emphasize the theme and genre much more, adding and eliminating parts of the story that had a big impact on the development of the story. Some details they added really set off that eerie mood and made certain parts feel forced, making the movie monotonous and predictable.
The director was trying to make the movie scarier, but as he did that and changed certain parts of the movie, he made it less authentic, and most of the fans noticed that. This really uninterested the viewers and critics, leading the movie to receive less good reviews and more critics. Some of the special effects we see are not as realistic and unexpected as we have seen in past movies from this franchise. I would even suggest they were mediocre and unconvincing due to the lack of credibility and the poor editing and quality of certain imagery. There was a certain scene towards the end of the movie, where the famous evil doll Anabelle (part of the Warren universe) is shown growing to a gigantic size as she haunts grown-up Judy Warren. This and more details that were part of the movie create misunderstanding and confusion towards the actual story.
This movie got a 3.2 in ratings, mainly because of the changes that were made to the original story and the unconvincing quality of the visuals, showing that a lot of people’s expectations went down due to these qualities and were not satisfied in comparison to the rest of the movies in the franchise.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” goes further than just jump scares; it shows how family dynamics affect us and our loved ones. It also reflects a deep message of how our past and who we are affects the present, as we get to see throughout the movie and in Warren’s story.
