“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” on Netflix is a must-watch mystery series that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Adapted from Holly Jackson’s best selling novel into a six-episode series that aired on Aug 1. While the series is well liked by those unfamiliar with the book, some fans of the original story find that the show lacks certain plot points. However, the overall adaptation still manages to deliver an engaging and thrilling mystery.
The series follows Pip, played by Emma Myers, a teenage girl living in a small town in Connecticut. Determined and curious, Pip decides to investigate the murder of the local girl, Andie Bell, five years prior. Andies’ then boyfriend, Sal, confessed to the crime before tragically taking his own life. Despite everyone’s confidence in the fact that he is guilty, Pip is determined to prove them wrong.
Though watching the series, the plot and characters are very similar to the plot of the book both with the same overall story.”There are some little parts that are changed because they can’t go exactly exactly by the book. But overall, i would say its pretty similar,” junior Nora Davenport explained.
One of the show’s major strengths is the suspenseful plot that was full of unexpected twists and turns that kept viewers hooked to watch more, but not so many that it was hard to follow.“The plot is easy to follow and big plot twists throughout,” Davenport said.
The casting also contributed to the overall enjoyment of the show. Emma Meyers was able to bring relatability to the character she played, especially because the show is targeted towards young adults. The younger generation value actors that can portray characters that act and think similar to them.
In addition to strong performances, the show’s sound and music play a vital role in creating the tension leading up to the plot twists. The series showcases many different artists and genres of music. Ranging from newer artists to the classics, the music and scenes matched perfectly with each other. Visually the series uses flashbacks, creating a sense of suspense and secrecy.
Although I enjoyed watching the show, there were some points in it where the characters fell into high school cliches. The stereotypical “dumb blond” and “smart, social outcast brunette” was something many viewers have seen before.
Overall, “a Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” is a must watch with the beautiful setting, easy to follow plot and suspenseful moments. It’s a perfect show to watch throughout your week or even binge on movie night. This series offers an engaging story for mystery thriller lovers.
