Watch for the adapted soccer team’s new leadership this year. With the loss of the team’s long time captains, graduates Tom Putnam and Rylynn Zanon, the team has elected juniors Mason Mora-Clark and Chase McCann as their new captains for this season.
According to one of the teams coaches, Cindy Williams-McClung, “Both Mora-Clark and McCann have shown great leadership for the team.”
“We are looking forward to having a winning season,” McCann and Mora-Clark both said. This is McCann’s second year on the team.
“I am excited to step up in Tom and Rylynn’s place as one of the team captains,” McCann said.
The team has both a JV and varsity squad with the team nearly doubling in size this year.
“It has been great that both Putnam and Zanon still come to practices and help out with the larger team,” Williams-McClung said.
The team’s season opener on Sept. 19 was canceled and rescheduled for Oct. 26 against South Washington at home at 4:30 p.m. The first game was played at home on Sept. 28 against the South Suburban Jets. The team took an early lead and continued to play well throughout the game.
“The varsity squad won 9-0,” Captain Mora-Clark said. The JV squad also took a win with a score of 5-0.
After qualifying for state last year and placing 3rd, they are optimistic that they will be back and take 1st place this year.

I’m so glad that the Adapted Soccer Team has gotten more recognition and grown in size over the past few years, as it gives a fair chance for mentally/physically disabled students to have one of the standard highschool experiences of playing a sport and being on a team.
