Peeps Doughnuts released for Easter
May 5, 2014
Walking into a convenience store, there are several types of doughnuts one expects to see. Among them are the typical glazed, powdered and jelly filled. But this spring, Dunkin Donuts has decided to mix it up and add extra flair to their frosted sweets: a Peep, placed right in the center hole.
Dunkin Donuts has been in the pastry business since 1950, but this is the first year that they have partnered with Peeps, the animal-shaped, sugar-coated marshmallow treats that usually rear their faces around this time, making appearances in Easter baskets and dioramas alike. The promotion started March 31. Dunkin Donuts is placing the candy in the middle of their green and pink frosted doughnuts, just in time for spring to start.
The doughnuts sound like a fun idea, and many people are excited. Senior Joey Young wished there were a Dunkin Donuts in Stillwater so he could try one.
“I like Peeps and I like doughnuts, so this sounds like a great idea,” said Young. “But I’d probably keel over if I ate one because my blood sugar would spike so high.”
Peeps are the go-to candy for Easter and spring, shown in their sales. Every year, Americans buy over 700 million of them, according to infoplease.com. Yellow is apparently the most popular color. Young thinks he knows why.
“They’re delicious,” said Young. “There’s not much that’s more American than a Peep- they’re sugar coated sugar.”
But not everyone is so enthused with the idea of “sugar coated sugar” atop a doughnut. Senior Ellen Kneeskern was disgusted by the thought of it.
“It sounds awful. It probably has a lot of calories and a cloying sweet flavor,” said Kneeskern.
Kneeskern is correct. One doughnut has 310 calories and 23 percent of the daily recommended amount of fat, according to the Dunkin Donuts website. There is also 21 grams of sugar just in the doughnut, plus another seven grams from the Peep, for a total of 28 g, more than a can of Red Bull Energy Drink.
That does not stop them from being popular. Sophomore Katie Messelt would eat one despite the nutrition facts.
“I wouldn’t eat one every day, but I wouldn’t be opposed to giving it a try,” said Messelt. “It’s a different idea.”
Peeps doughnuts at Dunkin Donuts are a limited time offer. Unfortunately, there is not a Dunkin Donuts in Stillwater, but it would not be difficult to recreate this spring delicacy at home by purchasing a frosted doughnut and a package of Peeps at a gas station or grocery store. Then, it would be possible to enjoy this sweet treat at home before time runs out.

I love Peeps and I also love donuts so I was instantly drawn to the article. The writer effectively informs the reader in what exactly a Peep donut is and how it came into existence. She also included reaction from various students and their opinions of the new donuts.

This was a very light and fun article that was written with great detail. You did a great job telling us all about what the donut is. I also liked being able to see peoples opinions on the Peep donut.

Great job Clara! I think your writing style matched perfectly to the lighthearted topic. I like that you found interesting quotes not just people saying how excited they were over and over again. I am glad that you actually wrote about people’s true feelings and did not try to spin it to make it a positive review of the product.

I really like your writing style, funny descriptive and interesting. The main reason that I opened this story was to see a picture of the Peeps donut and i was disappointed to not find one, yet I was pleasantly surprised by a great article!

I really enjoyed this article, your quotes were funny and you had a lot of interesting information on a very simple topic. I only wish there was a Dunkin Donuts in Stillwater so I could try this doughnut myself. Well done.

I thought this article was very descriptive and well written. I agree that the links were mostly common knowledge but what I had really wanted to see was an actual picture of a peep doughnut. Great article though!

I believe that the descriptive language that was used in the article was superb! I really enjoyed reading the article, but some of the links that were used in the article linked to some pretty obvious things that I believe are general knowledge.
