“Insurgent” boasts as impressive sequel

“Insurgent”, the second movie in the “Divergent” series, was released to an eagerly anticipating audience on March 20, 2015. The movie did an excellent job continuing the plot line of an apocalyptic future in which society is divided into groups of individuals based on personality types.

These groups of people are divided into five factions: Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity, and Candor. Beatrice Prior, the movie’s main character, does not fit into to any of these factions and so she is considered a dangerous member of society known as a Divergent. Beatrice and a small group of companions must then fight to survive and try to make it to the center of the city in order to stop a civil war from taking place. This film was based off of a book and so there are of course some key differences between this film and its counterpart novel.

“The movie Insurgent is drastically different from the book. If you are one of those people that can’t stand it when a book to movie adaptation deviates from the source material, you will probably hate this movie,” said Jessie S of www.imdb.com.

“Insurgent” is a good movie and if the viewer has never read the book before, odds are they will not notice anything that does not seem like it belongs in the film. In fact, people that actually have read the book refer more to the topics that are missing than the topics that have been added in.

Junior Maddy Nelson has already read the book “Insurgent” and she saw the movie when it first came out. Nelson thoroughly enjoyed the film but she did notice a few critical differences between the movie and the book.

“The book was better. It had more scenes of Beatrice turning herself in and being imprisoned,” said Nelson. Of course the movie does not have as many details as the book but Nelson’s biggest problem with this film was that it seems “so cheesy.” Many critics have said that “Insurgent” and the “Divergent” series in general is just copying the theme of the “Hunger Games” but Nelson believes both films are based off of the novel “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. Although Nelson thought the film was very good overall, the differences she noticed pail in comparison to those noticed by the books author, Veronica Roth.

The author of the “Divergent” series, Veronica Roth, was one of the first people to have seen the movie that was modeled after her book and she was simply ecstatic with how the film turned out. Although Roth was aware of many changes that were made to the movie from the book, she was thrilled to have seen what a good job the director did with creating an excellent movie.

“The changes that were made streamline the story so it makes sense for this new format; in other words, they work,” said Roth when referring to the differences between the book and the movie.

Roth also added, “Insurgent, the book, has a complicated plot—a lot of moving parts, a lot of ups and downs. That sort of thing can work in a book, but if it’s translated directly to the screen, it makes for a messy, confusing movie.” Roth was very pleased with how the film turned out even though it was fairly different from her novel.

“Insurgent” has exceeded the expectations of many viewers, whether they have read the book or just wanted to see an entertaining film. This movie had a few differences from the book it was based off of but that is the case for most books made into movies.

Overall the appeal of “Insurgent” outweighs any possible drawbacks that could be associated with a possible lack of detail in this two hour film. Changing a few pieces of the film’s plot is necessary if the director is intending to make a movie that the audience can watch and follow in a reasonable amount of time. Insurgent is an exceptional movie for anybody who just wants to see something entertaining and relatively easy to understand.
