Every school holds a prom dance in the spring. Most students can agree that the prom traditions such as going to dinner, taking pictures, getting ready outweigh the prom dance itself. The dance can be expensive, boring and uncomfortable considering students wear dresses, suits and heels to participate in an event that they are meant to dance at.
Many people claim that are going to prom but not have actual tickets for the dance. They still refer to it as “Prom day” and students participate in all of the prom festivities besides the dance itself. A lot of the time, those who buy a $50 ticket for the dance only end up staying for a very short period of time and it is not worth that large amount of money required for highschool students to pay to attend the dance.
Junior Maisie Rix attended her first prom this year. “My experience at prom this year was really, really fun. I had a great group of girls with me, but the dance itself wasn’t that fun. My group was probably there for about 40 minutes, and we paid $50 to attend, and the music wasn’t that good, and we didn’t see a ton of people that we knew or that we were close with, because not a lot of people actually end up going because it’s so expensive and it’s a little bit over hyped,” Rix said.
Some students can agree that the prom dance is not overrated and it is actually an enjoyable experience.
Senior Zander Wilichowski went to the dance last year, which was his junior year, and he had a good time. “It was really fun, a lot of people, good energy, the place was nice,” Wilichoski said.
How much fun people have is definitely dependent on who they go with or what school’s prom they attend. Sophomore Josie Hellyer attended New Life Academy prom and compared it to stillwaters, but most people can agree that the dance itself is definitely not the best part.
Hellyer said that she went with a great group of people who made her experience a blast. Everyone gets along super well and it was very welcoming, as she was going in very nervous.
“At new life academy everyone stayed for like two hours, which is not usually like stillwaters, but everyone was there to have a good time, and it was very fun to be around,” Hellyer said.
The dance tends to be boring for most students causing them to stay for short periods of time. Students state that overall throughout their whole prom night, the dance was not the best part, considerably the worst part.
“My favorite part about prom is getting ready with my friends and taking pictures and then hanging out with everybody afterwards, but I’d said that the dance really isn’t a part of the fun,” Rix said.
Overall most people’s opinions consist of prom being a good and memorable experience but more so the traditional components that come along with it such as pictures, dinner, the dance itself and more and people can agree that the day overall is a very fun time, but maybe not the dance itself.
