Music shapes Angus Pitulla’s life

Mac Miller, Leanord Skinner, Kanye, and the Beatles. These artists all have one thing in common, they are all listened to by junior Angus Pitulla. All throughout his teenage years, Pitulla has been known to have a broad taste in music. These tastes have shaped him completely as a person. 

Pitulla and his younger brother Ryan Pitulla love listening to music together. Music has become something that they can both bond over. The music they listen to is constantly changing depending on what album has been dropped lately. Ryan Pitulla recalls that “a month ago it would have been stuff off of the “OK Human” album like the new “Wheezer” album.” 

Angus has let his music shape his entire personality. From using the popular 1980’s phrase “word” to respond to others, all the way to his clothes. “You go off of your favorite artists. You want to be like them. Or you even buy their merch, and that becomes a part of your wardrobe.”

The Pitulla brothers have both taken up the guitar. Playing their favorite songs not only brings them closer together but to their music as well.

“Whenever new music comes out, we can learn songs on guitar, like Paul McCartney’s album. The first song on that album we both learned like, within a couple of weeks of it coming out, which was pretty cool. That was fun to do together, ” Ryan said.

Taking the time to learn the chords and the lyrics to a song takes serious time and dedication. 

It has not always been sunshine and rainbows for Angus. He has had some embarrassment in the past when it comes to listening to his favorite artists. He has struggled with accepting that his music might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

“Freshman year I realized that I shouldn’t be ashamed of what I listen to. I should listen to whatever I want to. I shouldn’t worry about what my Spotify Rewind is going to look like at the end of the year,” Angus said.

Throughout childhood and into his young adulthood Angus has grown into the person he is today. Enjoying his favorite songs and artists has shaped his entire life. He hopes he can show others that they can be themselves, and express that through their playlists.

“Just listen to what you want, you know what I’m saying? Don’t be afraid if you’re somebody who thinks they need to know songs to impress people. Or have a good playlist. You know? It doesn’t matter to anyone. Just play whatever you’d like. If people don’t like it, that’s fine you can switch to something else,” Angus said.
