Print media has declined over last decades

May 2, 2017

Over time, do fewer Americans receive print media? With the internet providing all sorts of other news sources, many families choose not to receive print magazines and newspapers. Over the last decade, much of the population stopped getting newspapers and print media, but that still leaves a large portion of people.

There are many different sources to receive news, some are newspaper, online websites or emails. Each source has its own pros and cons, for example, newspaper costs more money to receive every day, and online websites you do not have to pay for while if you receive emails you could accidentally discard them before even opening them. Many people can choose to have their own form of news or print media.

People that prefer to receive print media online not person can receive news faster in a more convenient way, while accessing media online anywhere they want. Online news and emails do have their flaws due to fake news and errors in websites and frequency of the emails or posts.

“Now people can see the news with just a few taps of their fingers due to Snapchat and other apps that have news, so it isn’t necessary for them to read the paper or have magazines,” sophomore Chinmay Sahu said.

As people shift to a more digital lifestyle, printed media becomes less popular in order to accommodate for the use of electronics that people use instead of printed versions. Printed media takes longer to come out, is more out dated, costs more money to produce and it is more for the consumer to buy.

I don’t think people our age would read the newspaper because we get our news from our phones and other sources online.

“I don’t think people our age would read the newspaper because we get our news from our phones and other sources online,” sophomore Maddie Leohr said.

Although people do read online newspapers significantly more than they formerly did, it could still be possible that the popularity of newspapers and magazines could increase in the future. Websites that are fake cause the public to question their validity, therefore forcing print media to be necessary in the life of a consumer.

“Certain school projects require newspapers and also many other adults like to read, so it is still necessary because of people that like to read on paper rather than online,” senior Ryan Bump said.

Over many years, newspaper was always one of the main source of communication. As people start using their phones, laptops and other electronic devices to look online for things, printed media becomes less popular. Print may be dwindling in popularity, but will still be needed in the future and could even become more acknowledged.
