Students, staff agree on favorite sports teams

February 14, 2017

Students and teachers usually have different opinions and interests outside of the classroom, but the one thing that mostly anyone can find common ground on is a favorite sports team. A stranger can be considered family just by what team colors they wear or what team they cheer for. A weekend can be either made is a last second field goal or wreaked with the frustration of another fourth quarter loss causing you to question the love for your team.

Anyone who lives in Minnesota, sports fan or not can relate to the Viking-Packer rivalry  and depending the house you grew up in, you were taught to like one and dislike the other. With the Vikings playing the Packers two times a year since 1961 and sharing a border these teams and fans are no strangers to each other.

“I would say that the rivalry is about the same now as it was back then, but what I have definitely learned is that people are very passionate about both teams and seem to cheer louder when the two teams play,” marketing teacher Debbie Drommerhausen said.

With fans circling both games on the schedule it is certainly something people get excited for. When the Vikings and Packers meet there’s more on the line for fans then just a win or a lose, there are bragging rights on the line for both sides. No matter the outcome, students and teachers always find away to bring the debate to the classroom in a fun way.

“Bragging rights are definitely a huge part of the game, with it being such a big rivalry you always want to be the one with the winning team. Regardless of the outcome though both sides can usually find something that they think they’re team is better at,” junior Mark Roettger said.

With the Packers getting the upper hand in recent years the Viking made a push back claiming the NFC North title in 2015 beating the Packers. As the rivalry continues both games each season are the ones that fans look forward to regardless of record and having the ability to make a season for each team.

Sports teams definitely bring people together by allowing them to cheer for the same thing and share the same passion as you do. It’s more than just sports.

“There’s a difference between Vikings fans and Packers fans and it’s that the Vikings fans get excited in September then have disappointing finish, and Packers fans have a disappointing start but get excited in December,” physical education teacher Mark Elmer said.

Choosing what sports team you want to like is like choosing what family you want to be a part of. A stranger can become your best friend just by wearing your team’s jersey or if they’re cheering for the same team you are. It allows people to share a common interest and be a part of a community.

“Sports teams definitely bring people together by allowing them to cheer for the same thing and share the same passion as you do. It’s more than just sports,” junior Ryan Carroll said.
