Jared Dean, Broadcasting Editor-In-Chief

Jared is the Broadcast Eic for the 2016-2017 year. Dean was a news anchor for his junior year and is looking forward to another great year on the broadcast team. He enjoys pizza, watching/talking about sports, Netflix, and hanging out with his friends. He is looking to pursue broadcast journalism in college to achieve his dream of being a sports anchor on ESPN.

The team looks to senior leadership to help direct the team towards success. We still have our first singles, Jack Leach, and first doubles, Parker and Cole Dutko, from last year who are now all seniors, so we have a more experienced team than last year, juinor Keyan Shayegan says.

Boys tennis team serving up high expectations

The new players on the team are the future of the program so the captains are making sure that they fit in with the rest of the team. We always try and include them, we hit with them as much as we can to make sure they improve, senior captain Jonathan Rustad says.

The team is filled with new players as well as many veterans. We always try and include the younger players because we know that its important for them to be involved in our practices, senior captain Jonathan Rustad says.

The tennis team is optimistic this year in their chances at making the state tournament. We have a really strong team this year it is one of the strongest I have been on in a while, senior captain Jack Leach says.

Yearys improvements with the team have helped him to become one of the teams go to early subs. Hes a great sixth or seventh man. He has got a floor general menality, Corcoran says. This mentality has helped Yeary to always been looking out for his teammates and taking a command of the court.

Yearys ability to adapt to the game is one factor towards his success this season. Some of the older players on the team have done a really good job with helping me improve my game, Yeary says. This leadership sets the tone for his future on the team and could soon be his future, leading the next generation of players.

Yeary is contantly looking for ways to improve his game. I think the next step for me is to work on my defense and my communication, Yeary says. These two elements of his game are extremely important to not only his own play but to the team as well.

Yearys skills are only with his hard work and commitment to the team. Ive seen him work very hard in practice. Weve seen him committing to putting pressure on the ball a lot more, Hannigan says. This hard work has helped Yeary to be one of the rising stars on the team.

Press Photo- Allan was able to establish a close bond with his fellow captains through years of play. He has been on the same soccer team as them for years, he has been able to establish a strong chemistry with them which then translates to a closer bond with his team as a whole. When he [Allan] wants to win a game you dont want to let him down. He really inspires you to play your best, Eckles says.

Patrick Allan leads varsity soccer team towards state title

Press Photo- Allan was nominated for Minnesotas Mr. Soccer award this year as well as being named on the All-State soccer team. He was just one of a few different Stillwater players to be named on the All-State team. I honestly didnt expect to be nominated for the award. I was just set on winning. If youre whole team is together youre going to win some games, Allan says.

Photo by Jared Dean- Stillwater was ranked first going in the state and seventeenth in the country for the 2016 season. Their success was thanks to the leadership of the captains as well as a common goal of winning the state title. We were all committed to the same thing. We all wanted to go out and win this thing (state tournament) so we committed 100 percent and we went out and did it, Allan says.

Press Photo- The boys soccer team finished with a record of 26-0 and a state championship. They fought hard and beat Wayzata in the championship with a score of 2-0. “Some of these kids may have played in games with similar stakes maybe of higher quality. But they don’t have the atmosphere that a state final is going to have. Every kid wants to play in front of his friends and family.” Smothers says.

Press Photo- Allan has been playing varsity soccer under coach Smothers for four years. His versatility of play is one of the reasons why he has had so much success in the soccer program. Smothers adds, “Patrick is a four year starter on varsity. His is a little different in how he leads the team he is more emotional and more of a physical presence on the field. But one thing we love about him is his flexibility he’s an athletic player who can fill a lot of different roles for us.”

A before school meeting is called a huddle, and each week it is student led by one of our student leaders and they decide what to talk about or which activities to do, Madison said. Games like Pictionary are often played at FCA meetings before or after having a discussion on the topic of the week.
