Senior Riley Buxell has had a more special connection with this 16 game winning streak that is continuing from last year and is still continuing to this year.

“We had two goals combined as a team returning this year. So, we didn’t know where the goals would come from this season, but it seems to be shaking out for us so far we’re undefeated in six games, and hopefully, we can keep that up.” said Buxell, a captain on the Boys varsity soccer team. Boys Varsity Soccer stays undefeated through 6 games and is hoping to win sections again and go onto state.

One thing that might impact that is they have lost 11 kids from last year that went off to college which means half their team is brand new and has never played varsity. But most of the new kids on the team play at a very high level of club soccer, so these new players on the team were not new to the sport by any means. But Buxell did not seem to be worried about them adding 11 new players, and he seemed more excited to see how this year plays out compared to last year.

“It was probably last year, winning a session final, and scoring the game winner. I was just overwhelmed with emotion. After a hard season, a COVID season. And to achieve something like that as a team, and to be a part of it was awesome.”

Last year Buxell scored the game-winning goal for his team to win sections and to move onto state, but sadly they canceled state last year due to covid restrictions, but this is what Buxell had to say about the feeling of scoring the game-winning goal…

“Just the perfect way to end the season realistically.” Going into that game they knew they had to work the hardest they have ever worked because if they won that game they didn’t even know at that point if they were going to have state or not. “We went into that game thinking. This had to be a win, we had to get a medal. And it was just such an awesome experience for the whole team.” Buxell said about scoring the game-winning goal.

Buxell has told me that he watches clips of his favorite professional players playing his position so he can see what parts of his game he can improve and he said that this is the player that he looks up to the most out of any player.

Buxell said that his favorite player to watch is Messi, he said his clips help him improve his game the most because of Messi’s knowledge of the game and his quick acceleration.

Finally, when asked what the proudest moment in his history of playing soccer was, he said that there was one story that really stuck out, out of all his memories.

“It was probably last year, winning a session final, and scoring the game-winner. I was just overwhelmed with emotion. After a hard season, a COVID season. And to achieve something like that as a team, and to be a part of it was awesome.” Buxell said.

The varsity boys have their sections tournament coming up in a few weeks and every day they practice with that in mind. It would be a great way for the whole team to end their season but it would be really special to the seniors from last year who would work so hard to win sections and have covid restrictions take away their state tournament. Buxell seems really excited to get the chance again to win sections and hopefully go onto state this year.
