Fashion consistently changes, but as it changes, old trends come back. People are influenced to wear trends such as scrunchies, tube tops, Vans, leggings, jean jackets and fanny packs because of marketing, media and advertising. Most trends that are coming back now are from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

People are mostly influenced by the media. Not only are teenagers on media all the time, but when someone sees their favorite celebrity on Instagram wearing something that may be an old trend, people want to wear it in hopes of being more like them.

People are constantly seeing advertising for clothes. For example, on TV commercials, people see a beautiful model wearing an old trend and then they want to buy that same thing because they want to feel good about themselves.

Since name brands are known as the “cool” thing to wear, companies like Nike and Adidas have highly impacted the way this generation dresses. Teens wear clothes they see each other wear and students influence each other more then they realize.

Alumni Alexandra Howard, who moved to New York to pursue her passion and work for the fashion industry explained,

“Athleisure is a trend that has been around for a while now. Brands such as Adidas and Nike have dug into their archives and have taken a modern spin on some of their vintage styles. They have made “retro” cool again.”

A lot of students follow old trends and do not even realize it. Students are influenced by others as well and recognize what others are wearing.

“I wear tube tops, high waisted jeans and scrunchies,” junior Bianna Warzeka said.

The 80s were known for its bold fashion statements. This includes bright colors such as neon with the purpose of standing out, which will soon be popular again.

“Neon is going to be really popular this spring and summer. Colors such as fluorescent greens, yellows and pinks are already domination stores and getting excited for warm weather,” Howard said.

While some students wear these trends on a daily basis, junior Delaney Wagner thinks otherwise.

“Every trend that is gone is gone for a reason so no there are not really any trends that I would want to come back,” Wagner said.

Trends will always come and go and be refined with each generation that wears them.

Sammydvintage explained, “Fashion is like one continually repeating movie remake-the characters remain the same, but the actors and actresses who play them are updated and upgraded to keep up with the times.”
