AirPods have been an extremely popular technology this school year. A fair portion of students own a set of AirPods, with even more students owning them after receiving them for Christmas.

AirPods are wireless headphones released by Apple™ that can last for five hours of listening to music without needing to be charged and over 24 hours with a portable charging case. These headphones are the most advanced headphones that Apple™ has ever released. They have features such as sensors to detect when they are inserted or removed from one’s ear, which enables music to automatically pause or resume.

Many people are unaware that AirPods were actually released in 2016, but only recently caught the attention of many. They now have a massive popularity around the country.  These wireless and supposedly effortless headphones have won the hearts of many students and are considered a new trend.

A lot of people just have them because they’re really nice to have and easy to use.

AirPods gaining popularity

Some students get AirPods because of their convenience, while others get them to solely fit into a new trend. The entire country was swept away by AirPods, convenience or trend, and according to Digital Trend, approximately 28 million sets of AirPods were sold in 2018. Junior Addy Oberg owns a set of AirPods and loves the product she purchased.

“A lot of people just have them because they’re really nice to have and easy to use,” Oberg explained, “so then everyone bought them and now people just think they’re cool.”

Differing thoughts on AirPods

AirPods are an extremely controversial product. Students who have AirPods generally love them, and students that do not have them have fair counter-arguments against them. AirPods cost $159 and there is a constant debate on whether or not the product is worth the price.

Sophomore Sam Gregg does not own a set of AirPods but added, “They’re kind of nice because you don’t have wires but they are also meticulously overpriced and it’s sort of like branding, because you’re buying them for the name brand.”

The convenience for gym-goers

Some students say that AirPods are worth the costly amount. AirPods are fairly user-friendly and can be helpful for students that workout and want to avoid the hassle of a wire. AirPods stay in range with the user’s iPhone for up to around 100 feet, give or take the amount of large objects in between the connection which can be useful for gym-goers.

“I got them because I work out a lot and not having a wire is convenient so it doesn’t get in my way when I’m running,” junior Jenna Yingling said.

Though the controversy of AirPods has been never-ending since the release date, they are a great and useful investment to some and a misuse of money to others. There are various points of view held on this product that are biased off of personal pros and cons to AirPods.
