Rankin creates makeup tutorials for Instagram users
Many people have different ways of coping with their insecurities and makeup is how junior Haley Rankin coped with hers. While she was in 7th and 8th grade, she suffered from really bad acne and makeup helped her feel more confident in her own skin.
“My acne eventually started going away and then I began enjoying the creative side of playing with makeup,” Rankin said.
The website called ‘Youtube‘ is full many different types of videos including various beauty-related videos. There are countless numbers of makeup tutorials, reviews on beauty products, skin care routines and hair care. Rankin’s favorite YouTuber and biggest inspiration, Jaclyn Hill, shares a love of makeup with her.
“She’s the reason I love makeup and started to have fun with it,” Rankin said. “She’s as amazing person as well as an amazing makeup artist.”
Showcasing her talent on instagram, Rankin’s page is growing with supporters. Once Rankin’s followers grow to a substantial amount, she plans on starting her own beauty based youtube channel. She aspires to be like Hill, creating makeup tutorials to help others become better at doing makeup.
“Haley’s youtube channel would be very successful. She has the personality for it,” junior Madi Gackstetter said.
The famous saying “practice makes perfect” is how Rankin mastered her makeup skills. Her trick to getting flawless makeup is watching tutorials over and over until she gets the technique down. Rankin explained how you can not just get good at doing makeup overnight, it takes practice just like any other activity.

“My advice for anyone trying to learn how to do makeup well is to practice, practice, practice!” That’s the only way you’ll get better and in no time, you’ll see improvement,” Rankin said.
Makeup can be expensive, especially name brand products. Rankin believes that spending money on higher end makeup products can be a way to say “you’re welcome” to your skin. She says that if you are to invest in one high-end product, it should be foundation. Rankin recommends buying from the brand ‘Colourpop’ for a brand that is inexpensive, but great quality.
“Investing in a high-end foundation is the way to go. It could save your skin, instead of running it from a lesser quality brand,” Rankin said.
Rankin not only does makeup for her own self, she often does it for her family and friends if they have to attend a special event. Rankin is their go-to girl when it comes to a full glam makeup look. For upcoming dances, including prom, Rankin says that she is more then happy to do anyones makeup for their special day.
“I think Haley’s unbelievably talented for someone our age,” junior Madi Gackstetter said.
Starting her own makeup line is Rankin’s dream. To fulfill her dream, she plans on going to college to get her esthetician’s license and a business degree. Sephora, a very well known beauty store, is where Rankin eventually would love to see her products being sold.
“I know it’s a big goal, but it’s my dream,” Rankin said.

I really like this article, because I know how girls especially notice how nice Haley’s makeup is. I agree with Tiana, how Youtube is well known and doesn’t require an introduction, but other than that and a couple little spelling errors I think this was very well written. I think the ending is the best part, it leaves readers with an inspirational message and a want to see what Haley does in the future.

This article is very informative about exactly what Haley loves about makeup. It also made it personal by adding in her goals of having a makeup line. I think the video added a personal touch as well.

I like how you strongly talked about Rankin’s goal without being repetitive. Two things I would suggest to improve upon: addressing Youtube- readers already know what Youtube is, also try to snatch a couple more interviews, this will keep your story from being superficial. Other than that, I love how you brought Rankin’s dream to paper, it really shows her passion- furthermore, your lead was strong.

I love this article because not only were the quotes really strong, but the amount of background information given on the topic of Youtube and Colourpop is helpful. I like this article because it is very informative. I think it’s very cool how the article provided the story behind Haley’s makuep talents in that she started a few years ago and is now perfecting her techniques. The quotes from her peers at school show what talent Haley has too.
