Hailey Buelow is 16 and a junior is high school. She attended Stonebridge elementary school and Stillwater area junior high before attending Stillwater area high school. She has an older sister and lives in both Marine and Stillwater. She writes for the people category for the newspaper and is a social media reporter on Facebook.

The yearbook club all sit and discuss a presentation made by one of its members. “As a group we change photos in yearbook all the time. Its Usually nothing too serious, but the photos need to be changed in order to benefit the finished product of the page, senior Sarah McCarthy says.

Yearbook teacher Laurie Hansen sits and has a discussion with the yearbook club. “When coming down to a decision on whether or not to keep the photo and edit it, or just choose a new photo, I would normally say to go reshoot this correctly which is what the students are supposed to do and is the most ethical,” Hansen says.

Senior Maddie Huntley explains what kind of edits they do to photos in the yearbook club. “When editing a photo there are obviously the basics like not making someone look a different size than they actually are and we always like to keep edits as minimal as possible,” Huntley says.

Sometimes when the lighting is very bad, brightness and contrast just wont cut it to improve being able to see the whole photo. So then we would have to adjust the blues reds and greens within the photo to make it easier to see,” McCarthy says.

Senior Maddie Huntley looks at changes made to photos in a yearbook and explains what kinds of edits she makes the most. “I mostly COB photos which is essentially cutting a photo down so its just the person and not the background and thats used for poll questions and such and then another edit I use a lot is cropping and making readjustments,” Huntley says.

You certainly couldnt distort a photo or falsify a photo in order to create an image of something that never happened,” McCarthy says.

I take advantage of the opportunities this teaching job has given me, such as raising falcons and doing things I’m passionate about while spreading on that love and excitement to my students,” Weaver says.

Weaver talks to students about science while doing stuff around the classroom while his class is at lunch. “Passing excitement and knowledge on about science and education to students is what it means to me to be a teacher,” Weaver says.

“Mr. Weaver teaches for the right reasons. He teaches because he’s passionate about what hes talking about and genuinely wants to impact students positively through education,” junior Christian Colburn says.

Weaver talks to a student during fifth hour, while everyone else is at lunch. “I love having Mr. weaver as a teacher, he always makes the learning material interesting by cracking jokes and his awesome sense of humor,” Junior Mason Schwerzler says.”

Weaver works on his maple syruping during fifth hour while his class is at lunch. His job gives him the opportunity to go above and beyond with what he loves doing each and every day. “I really like making stuff in science, so it’s awesome that my job allows me to do stuff like maple syruping in a typical day,” Weaver says.

Junior Bakange Ajak smiles while marching at the Women’s March in St. Paul on Jan. 21. I marched because of the rights that I have being in danger. I marched for my African brothers and sisters being targeted. I marched for the future of our country and its future leaders, Ajak says.

Student step up voice opinion, inspire change

An important strategy used is using empathy and compassion and insuring a judgement free zone, this isnt about if I think they are a good or bad person. They are who they are and we talk about the strengths and limitations they struggle with, Geigle says.

Giegle improves lives through chemical counseling

Geigle sits with a student Friday after school. I feel like everyone says Dont do drugs but theres not necessarily a safe place to talk honestly and openly about it wherever people are at, so Im just very passionate about creating that space for people, Geigle says.

Geigle sits in the room where she hold support groups. Shes a very valuable resource and beyond her interaction with kids one on one and with families, she does support groups, she works closely with our counselors in supporting kids, and she also goes into classrooms and presents, Assisant Pricipal Chris Otto says.

Seniors Hannah Harvieux and Ellie Smith join the rest of the Youth Republicans to watch and discuss the presidential debate at Harvieuxs house in the evening of Oct. 9. I love getting together with the club to watch the debates. My favorite part is being able to hear how my opinions/thoughts differ from other peoples, Harvieux said.

Oct. 4, a Wednesday morning, sophomores Jolie Anderson and Grace Arkell look up facts on different politicians. A nice part of the club is just learning the ropes of politics and understanding the different positions, Anderson said.

On Oct. 12, a Wednesday morning, sophomores Jolie Anderson, Josie Scherek and Grace Arkell all take a look at Andersons presentation on Donald Trump. Everyone in the Youth Republicans is assigned a Republican to make a presentation on and share the facts to the rest of the group. I was assigned to do my presentation on Donald Trump, Anderson said.

On Oct. 12, a Wednesday morning in Debbie Drommerhausens room, juniors Joe Sanderson and Cole Fernandez discuss the new fundraiser the Youth Republicans are holding. Sophomores Blake Evenson, Teddy Sagissor, and Ethan Darby listen in on their conversation. We are thinking about selling popcorn in the main rotunda to help raise money as part of the fundraiser, selling popcorn actually raises a ton of money that will be helpful to the club, Sanderson said.

Wednesday mornings, the Youth Republicans join together for a meeting in their usual meeting place in Debbie Dromerhausens room. Seniors Alyssa Lamers, Ellie Smith, Michaela Ingerbretesen, Marcus Darby and Mitch Banken, junior Noah Ness and sophomores Jolie Anderson, Grace Arkell and Josie Scherek discuss Andersons presentation on Donald Trump. Seeing the Youth Republicans in action is where you get the best idea of what the groups purpose is. We didnt do much today other than relax and discuss a few things, because the past few meetings have been busy with speakers, Smith said.
