School related stress spurs anxiety

Many students struggle with stress and anxiety that comes from school. There are other factors that lead to stress, such as bullying or the different cliques at school. Homework, however, also causes a major impact.

There are a lot of different school related pressures that can often stress out students. If they need help dealing with this stress, there are different ways they can learn to handle it.

Guidance Counselor, Kristina King, said “every student has stress. They just need to know how to deal with it and what options they may have or someone to turn to.”

One of the largest problems is the school work and how much homework teachers give students every single night. With the school year starting, it affects many students today and junior Lily Weidner helped explain some of the stresses that she sees at school.

Weidner said, “getting homework has always been stressful. Getting it turned in on time and making sure it’s correct and getting points can be difficult especially when you fall behind. It is very stressful to be a student. There is a lot of pressure with doing homework and understanding what is being taught to you.”

Another form of stress students deal with is bullying. Bullying comes in many forms and all of them could harm someone.

“I hear a lot of stories where kids have been bullied on social media sites. Our generation thinks this is normal communication and it’s actually meaner. It causes people to have low self-esteem, lack of confidence and fear,” King explained.

There are many ways that students can be helped with different bullying situations or just stress about school and anything else going on in their life.

Junior Brad Glynn said, “go to someone that you know will be able to help you. It could be a staff member, parent or the wellness center. If you can’t accomplish this by yourself, you can always ask a friend to help you do something about it.”

On that same point, other than talking to different people in their life, there are other ways to handle stress and deal with it.

Weidner said, “Getting lots of rest, being healthy and just relaxing are very helpful things that can help you deal with stress. Also, don’t worry about what’s going to happen. Just be okay with what’s happening and accept it.”

Students who are being bullied or who have a lot of issues with stress should consider these options, because they are not alone. There are other kids that have experienced the exact same things that they might be going through and can understand everything that they are feeling. These students might even be able to help out in some shape or form and give advice. There are many different places and people students can talk to, so they shouldn’t hold it in, they should talk to someone.
