Junior Tanner Schmidt had a breakout season as the Ponies football team becomes 5-0. After putting in work during the off-season, it finally started to pay off, especially when looking at his stats of the season so far.

Quarterback senior Max Shikenjanski has thrown for 1,478 yards and of those yards Schmidt received 521 of them. Schmidt received 6 out of 17 touchdowns that Shikenjanski has thrown this season, making him the number 1 wide receiver on the team. It is only Schmidt’s junior season and he is coming close to breaking school records, especially after the first game with about 190 receiving yards and multiple touchdowns.

“I knew what he was going bring to the table. I didn’t know it was gonna be this big,” Shikenjanski explained.

Every Friday, Schmidt gets to show off his moves he has been working on all week.  For him, the work is more than just an in season job. He is always doing his best to become a better player. In the offseason, he can be seen at ETS doing lifts and training with his friends.

“I got my work ethic from my hard working mother,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt’s favorite NFL player is Odelle Beckham Jr., which makes sense because of the similar play style. With sharp routes, amazing hands and leadership skills, Schmidt and Beckham are closely resembled. Even Schmidt likes to think he could be like Beckham. Schmidt added that “he trains to be similar to Odelle”.

“I took three on purpose to have the same jersey number as Beckham,”  Schmidt said about picking a jersey number.

Teammates and the community recognize his hard work is paying off.

“I am a huge fan of Ponies Football and all pony sports and I love Tanner,” senior Louis Hoye said.
