Girls soccer going small, but still a top team in the state

The girls varsity soccer team has had strong season this year with a record of 13-2 so far. They are also going for the state championship for the second year in a row.

Since last year, the girls team lost 12 seniors. This year the coaches took the best 22 players in the school, and half of them ended up being freshmen. With 11 out of the 22 players being freshmen, there might be some new challenges.

“It is more just the mentality because they are freshmen, …they are young girls learning to play in the high school world,” special education teacher Dusty Dennis said.

Dennis said they are not the most confident players on the field because there is a four-year difference between them and some of the other players. They make mistakes and are harder on themselves when they do.

The girls soccer team is always one of the best teams in the state.

Junior Brooke Nelson said that the best thing about this team is not always the winning, but the connections they make with each other.”

The people, we are all just super together as a team and we’re just all really close,” Nelson said.

Since the team won state this past year, and are in the top two rankings this year, they are the team that everyone wants to beat.

They wanted to rip our faces off and we were not ready for it.

Dennis and Nelson both agree that the teams are coming out a lot harder as expected.

“They wanted to rip our faces off and we were not ready for it,” Dennis said.

They wanted revenge because our girls team beat them in the state championship last year.

“I feel like we have a target on our back, ”Nelson added.

When there is a varsity team full of freshmen it can come with some challenges.

Dennis said that the biggest challenge for the team does not have much to do with the skill, but with the experience.

“It’s experience. It’s just like we don’t have a lot of girls who have experienced the big game,” Dennis said.

The only way to better this problem is just by playing. The biggest games for the girls team have just recently started. These next games will be the toughest of their season because this is when it starts to really matter.

The girls soccer team has been winning because of their hard work and perseverance.
