Hold or fold, wrestling team raises money

With many Stillwater teams having to raise additional money over the past several years, the Stillwater Area High School Wrestling booster club has decided to go beyond the usual Pony Cards or cookie dough tactics to cover the team’s cost this spring.

Deciding to move forward with a unique idea, they held a poker tournament in order to raise money for the Stillwater wrestling team, with the funding going to all teams. The tournament was held in Texas hold’ em format at the Stillwater VFW on May 4.

Those who have organized the event have set up several different options for the players once they enter the building.

Organizer Julie Dauffenbach said, “It’s a fundraiser that will benefit the Stillwater wrestling program, from kindergarten to the high school. A $50 donation will get you in the door, where you can then play poker, eat and bid on items in the silent auction.

The success of this event will mean more funding to help improve all wrestling teams in the district.
