Makeup tutorials on social media platforms increase

March 25, 2017

Makeup tutorials have been around for a while, most on YouTube.  In the past year the tutorials have reached new audiences and members through all different types of social media.

Makeup tutorials have grown through different social medias including Twitter and Instagram instead of primarily on YouTube.  The tutorials on Instagram and Twitter, however, are primarily shorter and if one wants a more in depth tutorial YouTube is the best way to go. This growth through social media has allowed the tutorials to grow in popularity overall.

Junior Alyssa Fontaine said, “I actually first saw them on Instagram…I mainly watch them on YouTube now.”

More guys have started to participate and create more makeup looks as well. Males doing makeup tutorials have added a new dimension to makeup and have brought in a new audience.  Our generation has shown more acceptance and Cover Girl has actually recently introduced the very first Cover Boy, James Charles. The acceptance by most has helped people truly be themselves.

I think it’s really cool that people can have that much talent just for makeup…They can teach people a lot, some people learn from just watching the tutorials.

Sophomore Tatiana Biessener said, “Girls don’t have to be the only ones to do makeup.  If it makes you feel happy it shouldn’t matter which gender you are.  We can learn things from both male and female perspectives on the internet.”

The tutorials have brought inspiration to both the creators and the viewers.  They help give inspiration to people who want to show who they really are and their talents.  They can help people who really want to learn and grow their ability to create their own makeup looks.

Fontaine said, “I think it’s really cool that people can have that much talent just for makeup…They can teach people a lot, some people learn from just watching the tutorials.”

The videos are not only restricted by the original makeup looks, they have opened a doorway to all kinds of creative looks.  Some show more gory looks that are most popular during Halloween, but very original and creative looks overall.  The tutorials really allow people to show their art in different ways.  Allows artists to be creative in new ways.

Junior Morgan Heintz said, “Their makeup is their ways of painting or other types of art just on their faces.”

There are many different ways to create makeup looks both unique and disguising.  People have changed the way we look at make up and the dynamics or art of changing your face.  Contouring is a way that has become more popular in the later years which is used a enhance the face shape to which ever way the artist wants it.  It can shrink or enlarge certain areas and has become more and more used in everyday wear.  The tutorials help people who aren’t as good grow their abilities.

Heintz said,”Conturing has become such a big trend lately, it has changed or really made up a new way to do makeup.”

Throughout the past year makeup tutorials have allowed creative people to present their talents through various social media outlets.  As an accepting generation more people have been allowed to breakout of their shell and in the future become more creative and original.

Makeup tutorials are becoming such a big trend with young people. I like how the makeup community is portrayed in a positive, accepting light, it really adds a lot of dimension to the story!
