The Stillwater Boys Swim and Dive team won second place at the True Team State meet on Jan. 24 at the University of Minnesota.

The True Team State Competition is an event put on by the MN Swim Coaches Association each year for boys and girls swim and dive teams.  Stillwater was beat by Minnetonka’s team by about 200 points.

In recent years, Stillwater’s teams have scored in the top 5 teams and second place this year was no exception.

“We got second last year and third the year before, so we were expecting to get first this year,” said senior John Gribble.

Senior Tanner Call was not expecting first place because he “had seen how good Minnetonka is.”

“I figured we’d get close but not beat them,” he explained.

Call swam the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststroke and was in many of the relays this year.  He was not expecting first place this year because he “had seen how good Minnetonka is,” however he did meet his personal goals for the season.

“This year my goal was to improve times.  My best was the 50-yard breaststroke.  I shaved three seconds off that and three to four seconds off the 100-yard,” explained Call. “I improved times, coach smiled,” he added.

Gribble’s goal was to set a new personal best and to improve strokes he was not as good at.

“This year, I am better, times are faster, I can do more strokes.  I’m just doing better as I go along.  This is one of the few sports I am good at.  I throw for track too,” said Gribble.

The boys swim and dive team has another four weeks in their season and they plan to continue  to improve their scores.
