Justin Hannasch is a senior this year. He is a Print Editor-in-Chief on the Pony Express Newspaper. Justin enjoys hockey, golf, and racing and is also in Debate and Mock Trial. Justin's favorite restaurant is Jimmy John's and his favorite movie is Miracle.

Stillwater made it to the third place game at the state tournament against Wayzata who later won state the following day. The whole tournament was a blast to be at. Although the boys didnt win first place, it was still fun to have the school and community cheering them on, senior Mathias Hoefferle said.

Community members of all ages fill the Stillwater Junior High School auditorium on Feb. 11 to hear the decision on the BOLD proposal. “I had to go to the meeting for my government class and it was nothing like I had expected. The place was filled and the listening session got pretty intense with people fighting against BOLD,” senior Sarah Ogren says.

Max Ylitalos recent science fair project recently won not only the Da Vinci Fest, but also the Science Talent Search. He was one of only four chosen from Minnesota. I designed a new method for producing ethanol from waste paper that is more cost effective than using corn. The project is called Experimental Design Optimization of Surfactant Enhanced Waste Paper Hydrolysis Ylitalo said.

Ylitalo was one of only four students in Minnesota, and 300 nationwide to win this prestigious award handed out annually. Ylitalos invention can be looked at as helping cars in the future. Ylitalo explained, I came up with my design after seeing articles in the newspaper about how corn isnt a good source of ethanol, so I researched other types of ethanol and found that its possible to make ethanol from any source of cellulose and paper is full of refined cellulose so I thought Id give it a try.

Not only did Ylitalo win a $1,000 prize for himself for his invention, but Intel also donated $1,000 as well to SAHS to help in areas such as the science department. I was honestly very surprised to be chosen for the award because I have seen the high caliber of the research high school students like me all around the world are doing, and I was just very honored to see that my research is among the best. I think this will definitely help me in college since I hope to continue my research, and hopefully work in developing new renewable energies, Ylitalo explained.

The park is the second largest in Stillwater, besides Lake Elmo Park reserve. With all the new housing going into Lake Elmo, this park could be a popular destination for new kids and families. Lion’s Park is also home to Huff N Puff, a popular softball tournament. Ridgway explains, Huff N Puff is kind of a big deal for such a small town. It would be nice for the community to have a nicer ball field for everyone to play on. I feel like a lot of people would want to spend more time at Lions if it had nicer tennis court, basketball hoop and playground as well. I would definitely miss the old park I grew up with, but only positive things can come from new renovations.

According to the Stillwater Gazette, “Lake Elmo Parks Commission chair Shane Weis came before the city council Nov. 4 requesting permission to work with an architect who specializes in ball fields with a vintage theme. Weis told the council this project is on the parks commission capital improvement plan (CIP) for this year.” If voted on, renovations would be set to start building in 2016.

The park could see a new $150,000 renovations to make the baseball field into a new, vintage style looking field. The idea of a classic, updated field sounds great. When I think of Lake Elmo, its hard not to think about its history. Downtown Lake Elmo is such an interesting and old place it just seems right to have an old baseball field. Being able to recreate the feeling of an authentic classic baseball field but with updated assets is such an excellent idea. It could only make the kids baseball games and Huff N Puff more enjoyable for the player and the spectators, says senior and Lake Elmo resident, Brock Ridgway.

Lion’s Park in Lake Elmo, MN is home to Lake Elmo Baseball and owned by the Lake Elmo Jaycees. This 3.2 acre park has been around for quite sometime. The park has two baseball fields, a tennis court, playground, even a volleyball court. Some major renovations could be expected in the near future as well.

With new construction coming in 2015 and 2016, some argue this is a bad idea and these resources should be going somewhere else. Even though Lions Park is a classic park, it is still one of the more run down fields in the vicinity of Lake Elmo, but I dont think this would be a good use of resources. With the new housing developments going into play, I feel that they should be more focused on that rather than trying to renovate Lions Park, says senior Wyatt Miller.

John Francis graduated Stillwater High School in 2000 and went to college for Ministry. His scholarship is in his honor after he lost his life climbing a mountain in Idaho in 2006. It took a year to find is body but his family never gave up. You can read all about the process in finding Jon in the book his dad David wrote.

Scholarship to honor deceased graduate

The Jon Francis Foundation Scholarship is one of many scholarships in this application packet. What is unique about this scholarship is Jons dad who runs the foundation is willing to give a free copy of the book that he wrote Bringing Jon Home to anyone who applies for the scholarship, said Weaver.

Hanson is one of many applying for the Jon Francis Foundation Scholarship. I think its really cool what David and Linda did. I dont think a lot of people that would go through that tragedy like they did, and end up turning a bad situation into such a good situation like the Jon Francis Foundation and something that helps the community so much, explained Hanson.

The College Career Center is located just across from the White Pony Center and is the place to go for the SAHS Community Scholarship Application. The application has pages and pages of scholarships and many have special requirements to give everyone a chance at some scholarships.

Senior Sam Hanson shares a lot in common with Jon Francis. Not only was Jon a good student like Hanson, Jon was involved in Track, Cross Country and Nordic Skiing. Hanson happens to be in all three of those sports and is captain in two of them.
